    Doctor Strange #182 Sep 1969
    "And Juggernaut Makes Three!"
Still trapped by his own Eye of Agamotto, Dr. Strange bears witness as Nightmare is about to combine Earth with both its past, and its future.
However he is interrupted by the arrival of the Juggernaut, who has come seeking a passageway back to Earth.

Convinced that Doctor Strange is the one who can take him back, he fights Nightmare, in hopes of stealing his captive.

Dr. Strange uses this distraction to wriggle himself free of his captivity, and summon up an illusory image of himself.
When Nightmare and Juggernaut notice the freed sorcerer, they work together to subdue him
once more, but send their mystic bolts at the illusion, which they pass through and free Eternity.
The two villains continue their alliance, this time trying to overpower Eternity.
However, Eternity banishes both Nightmare and Juggernaut to another realm
and restores the natural order, before returning Dr. Strange back to Earth.
There, Wong hands him a telegram, which was addressed to Stephen Strange
prior to the fight in Nightmare's realm, but now reads Stephen Sanders.
Strange reveals that Eternity has given him a new alias as a reward for helping to free him.

    Uncanny X-Men #185 Sep 1984
    "Public Enemy"
Government agent Henry Gyrich is having a meeting at the Pentagon where he is reporting on the mutant known as Rogue.
After explaining her powers, her previous criminal history and recent attack on SHIELD,
he tells those gathered that he has been authorized to use the neutralizer weapon invented by Forge to stop her.
When Raven Darkholm protests this move, wondering how Gyrich got a prototype when it hasn't even been tested,
she is shocked to hear that her co-worker Valerie Cooper supports this move
and no amount of protests will stop the action from being carried out.

At the X-Mansion, Storm interrupts Professor Xavier's session with Rachel Summers to inform him that Rogue has left.
The Professor leaves Rachel alone while he and Storm go downstairs to try and track Rogue using Cerebro.
Left to her own devices, Rachel decides to look around the Professor's office.
Finding a phone book that lists her father Cyclops living in Alaska, she decides to call and speak to him.
However, when she hears his voice and the voice of Madelyne Pryor in the background,
Rachel cannot bring herself to utter a single word and eventually Cyclops hangs up.

While back in Washington, Mystique returns to her room to find that Destiny is there waiting for her.
Irene warns that Rogue is in trouble, however Mystique wonders if allowing Gyrich
to neutralize her powers could be to the benefit of Rogue having a normal life.

When she asks Irene what the future has in store for Rogue, Destiny cannot see
into the immediate future as some temporal anomaly prevents her from doing so.
As Gyrich approaches where they are tracking Rogue,
Mystique contacts Forge and tells him that the government is using his prototype without testing it.
Forge is furious and flies after them in his private jet, while placing in a call to the president.

While in Caldecott Country, Mississippi, Rogue is spending time relaxing along the banks of the Mississippi River.
She is found by Storm who confronts her with the truth about the phantom memories she's been living of Carol Danvers.
When Rogue admits that she is struggling to find a way to control her powers and fears harming them,
Storm convinces her to willingly absorb some of her power.
Rogue is reluctant at first, but since Storm is willingly offering up her powers, Rogue tries it out.
The power absorption knocks Storm out, and Rogue is completely amazed by the abilities she has gained and how Storm sees the world.

After finding that mastering Storm's powers would take some work, Rogue is attacked by Gyrich and his men.
As Rogue attempts to avoid getting blasted by the neutralizer,
her weather controlling ability spirals out of control and a massive storm is created, threatening a nearby boat.
Storm, having revived, comes to Rogue’s aid to control the weather and pull the boat to calmer waters.
Gyrich takes this as an opportunity to get a clear shot on Rogue, however Storm shoves her out of the way.
Storm is struck by the weapon, causing her powers to flare out of control,
destroying the ship and knocking Rogue far away, before being neutralized.
Storm falls unconsciously to the water below where Forge, having arrived just in time to witness the event, dives in to her rescue.

He is furious at Gyrich for using his untested prototype and the fact that he hit an innocent woman.
He points out that Storm is a member of the X-Men and Gyrich's stupidity today
may have turned the X-Men from champions of humanity to their enemies.

Watching this from a mystical pool far away are the Dire Wraiths who have analyzed Forge's weapon
and find that it is similar to that which was used by ROM the Spaceknight.
In order to guarantee their victory in taking over the Earth, the Wraiths have come to the decision that Forge must die.

I think 184 is one of my first classic issues of Uncanny! The reading order I followed in real life was all messed up because I 1) didn't have that much money to spend on comics and 2) didn't know jack about X-Men at first lol. So it was a random but joyous ride.

    Uncanny X-Men #248 Sep 1989
    "The Cradle Will Fall"
Donald Pierce and his new compatriots, the Reavers, practice their coming attack on the X-Men.
Meanwhile, back in Australia, Longshot dreams.
In the state of Dreamtime, brought on by Gateway, Longshot speaks with Storm
and tells her that he must leave the group to search for his identity.
Nanny and the Orphan Maker, knowing of the coming deadly conflict with the Reavers,
finalize their plan to save the X-Men, quite against their will.

They arrive at the X-Men camp

and swiftly capture Psylocke, Havok and Dazzler.
The three captured X-Men are placed in armor, designed by Nanny, which bend the X-Men against their will.
The three are then forced to use their powers against the still free X-Men, Storm and Colossus.
During the following conflict Havok is freed from his armor.
Still groggy, he fires a plasma discharge at Nanny's fleeing sky ship, which crashes to the ground, exploding on impact.
To his horror, Havok is informed that the ship carried not only the fleeing Nanny and Orphan Maker, but the captured Storm as well.

She is found dead among the debris.

But even then, I still kept up to date on X-happenings via the internet/CBR etc. Now...I am much more selective in what I purchase X-wise but my love for the Mutants still lives strong...especially with what I've seen coming in July.
Assuming your love for the Mutants has been rewarded in the comics recently, hopefully, that will also be the case whenever the live-action versions will be introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

    Uncanny X-Men #61 Oct 1969
    "Monsters Also Weep"
    Continued from last issue...

While going out to investigate reports of a reported winged mutant, Angel runs into Sauron,
the pterodactyl man who was once renowned scientist Karl Lykos. Confronting the creature,
Warren falls prey to his hypnotic gaze and is made to see phantom images of gigantic flying monsters.
Realizing that they are only illusions, Warren manages to shake off
the effects and resume his attack on Sauron. However the creature flees.

This flight is short lived when the other X-Men catch up to Warren and Cyclops
strikes Sauron with an optic blast and held in place telekinetically by Jean.

However, Sauron uses his hypnotic gaze to make Marvel Girl see the other X-Men as monsters.
Sauron laughs at this, leaving him open to an attack from both Angel, Beast and Iceman.
Only Iceman's ice powers seem to have much of an effect on Sauron.
Back at Lykos' office a phone rings which starts to make Alex begin to stir.
While back at the battle, Sauron begins to change back into his human form.
Catching Warren in his hypnotic gaze once more, the rapidly changing Sauron orders Angel to take him back to his office.
As Warren sprints off with the now human Lykos in hand, the X-Men call out to Warren to stop
helping their enemy escape, and Lykos vows that the X-Men will see Sauron again very soon.

Returning to his office, he finds that his fiancée Tanya has arrived at his office and is looking over the unconscious Alex Summers.
Shocked to find her here after her father had forbidden her to see him,
she tells him that she had a premonition that something was wrong and had to come and see him.
Scott and the other X-Men soon arrive at Lykos' office in their civilian guises
to check on Alex having given up searching for Warren for the time being.
They arrive just as Alex awakes. He thanks Karl for his help and books a second appointment.
The happy scene is shattered when Tanya's father arrives, furious that his daughter has disobeyed his wishes
and has come to see Lykos, whom Mr. Anderssen believes to be nothing but a fraud and charlatan.
Lykos agrees with Anderssen, that only money and power will make him worthy of Tanya's love and vows angrily to get it.
Tanya storms out in tears with the elder Anderssen following after her.

When the X-Men ask about the billing, Lykos tells them he will mail it to them
and dismisses them and begins plotting to become Sauron once more.

Returning to headquarters, the X-Men find Angel waiting for them in some kind of trance.
Snapping him out of it, Warren screams out Lykos' name and lashes out forcing Hank to knock him out.
Realizing that there is some sort of connection between Karl Lykos and Sauron, the X-Men change into their costumes
and decide to go and investigate, leaving Lorna to keep an eye on Alex and Warren.
As the X-Men leave, Lykos arrives at the X-Mansion and breaks in.
When overhearing Lorna trying to talk to a sleeping Alex, he overhears her say that she is a mutant.
Serving his needs, Lykos sneaks up behind her and begins to absorb her energy, turning into Sauron once more.

Sauron attacks Anderssen in his home and Anderssen recognizes Sauron's voice to be that of Karl Lykos.

Suddenly, the X-Men arrive and attack Sauron, driving him away.
Sauron momentarily regains the facilities normally maintained as Karl Lykos and realizes how evil he has become.
When the X-Men ask Tanya where Lykos might go, she lies and tells them that
she doesn't know, wanting to pursue him to provide support him through this time.

Karl travels to his father’s old home in Tierra Del Fuego where it's isolation will keep him away from human
hosts in the hopes that he will eventually "starve" to death having been cut off from and human energy sources.
Days later Tanya, who deduced where Lykos had gone arrives, much to his horror.
Realizing that he must end his life quickly, Lykos attempts to commit suicide by jumping off a cliff.
The X-Men, having followed Tanya in secret, attempt to stop both
lovers from going over the cliffs edge, with Iceman erecting an ice barrier.
He is only in time to save Tanya from the lethal plunge. With Lykos presumably dead,
the X-Men comfort the grieving Tanya and take her away from the scene.

Freeing themselves from the rubble of Magneto's collapsed base,

the Defenders and Professor X travel to the United Nations building in New York.
Taking the rapidly evolving Alpha to the UN building in New York,

Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #6 Oct 1984
    "A Little Death..."
After trying to escape the X-Men, the Wasp finds herself trying to get her escape ship under control.
Unable to figure out the strange controls, the Wasp ends up crashing the ship.
Unsure of where to go, she finds a holographic projector that shows her a nearby dome
and she decides to shrink down to wasp size to try and locate it.
On her way out, she turns and uses one of her bio-stings to destroy the ship.
Flying into a nearby swamp she fights off some aggressive insects and finds the dome that the ship showed her earlier.
Returning to human size the Wasp figures out what to do next when she is suddenly attacked by the Lizard.

Meanwhile, aboard the Worldship of Galactus, Doctor Doom uses a device
there to draw a strange energy he detected within the walls of the ship.
To his surprise this energy reforms into Klaw, the so-called master of sound.
Much to Doom's dismay, Klaw's mind has been affected by the ordeal,
but Doom learns that Klaw got trapped during a battle with Dazzler.
The mutant used her powers to convert his sound form into light energy that she then absorbed into her body.
Later when she was abducted by Galactus, she used that energy to try and attack him,
but the energy did nothing and Klaw's form became trapped in the wall.
Finding Klaw of no use to him, Doom then continues to find something that will help him stop Galactus and then the Beyonder.
Finding a control monitor, Doom views the events on Battleworld.
He sees the gathered heroes regrouping after their battle with his minions who have now fled back to Doombase
while Galactus himself continues to prepare the device that will help him consume Battleworld.
Doom quickly formulates a plan to spoil Galactus' plan
and uses a teleporter to send Klaw down to the planet to deliver a message to his minions.

When Klaw materializes in Doombase, he recites a code word that convinces Ultron that he was
sent by their mutual master, prompting the gathered villains to listen to what Klaw has to say.
Back in the swamp, the Wasp realizes that the Lizard has attacked her out of fear due to the fact that he has been injured.
Convincing the Lizard that she means no harm, the Wasp manages to get close enough to him to treat his wound.
While back at Magneto's base, the X-Men have returned to salvage what they can after it was blasted by Galactus.
Feeling weak, Xavier decides to take a moment to rest.
He then reaches out with his mind telepathically to see what the villains are up to.
Before the Enchantress detects his presence and uses her magic to block him out, Xavier learns how the villains are
planning to cause a volcanic eruption on the other side of the planet and summons his X-Men to venture out and stop them.
When he puts Cyclops in charge this angers Storm as she is the leader of the X-Men.
But when she confronts Charles with this, he warns her that if she refuses to follow his
orders he will not be against using his mental powers to force her to follow his bidding.
Storm concedes but still believes that he is leading the X-Men into defeat.

Meanwhile, at the heroes camp in the alien village, Colossus
continues to recover from the injuries he incurred in the last battle.
He finds himself torn between his feelings for his girlfriend Kitty Pryde back home
and these new feelings he has for Zsaji the alien healer who saved his life.
When she comes to heal him again he tries to open up his feelings for her, but the language barrier prevents her from doing so.

When she goes to depart, she is picked up by the Human Torch who does some areal tricks with her before kissing her

and taking her away, making Colossus grow even more jealous.

Elsewhere Captain America is planning strategies with Mister Fantastic, the Hulk, the Thing and She-Hulk.
When She-Hulk demands that they go looking for the Wasp, who is still missing,
Cap assures her that Captain Marvel is searching for them.
All this talk begins to get on the Hulk's nerves who demands that they go out and smash their enemies.
Not far away, Hawkeye is preparing some traditional arrows after the last of his trick arrows were used to boost Iron Man's armor.
Iron Man meanwhile tries to hit on Captain Marvel, who is uninterested
and confused -- unaware that the man inside the armor is not the Iron Man she has previously known.
For himself, James Rhodes wonders what has come over him and complains about his head hurting,
which has been happening a lot recently since he became Iron Man.

At that moment the X-Men attack the villains at the volcano in an attempt to foil their plans.
During the ensuing battle, Wolverine manages to get close enough to the Molecule Man to slash him across the chest
with his Adamantium claws, although Cyclops blasts Wolverine's arm to prevent him from striking a fatal blow.
The villains retreat with their injured comrade and Cyclops unleashes an optic blast in a volcanic cone

which causes the X-Men to flee themselves when the volcanoes begin to erupt.
While back at the swamp the Wasp finishes binding the Lizard's wounds when she is suddenly
shot through the chest with a laser beam fired by a massive vehicle piloted by the Wrecking Crew.
When the Lizard tries to attack them, they immobilize the creature with a stasis beam
and take the two prisoners even though they believe the Wasp is dead.
Back at the Heroes camp, things appear even grimmer when they see
that Galactus has almost completed his planet-devouring device.
As they contemplate what to do next they are unaware that a shadowy figure is observing their movements.

    Uncanny X-Men #186 Oct 1984
    "Lifedeath"
Storm has been taken to the Dallas, Texas home of mutant inventor Forge following an ordeal
where her powers have been stripped from her by a weapon of Forge's own invention.
Unaware of this fact, the former mutant has lost her will to live and has spent her time in Forge's company refusing to eat.
Forge's attempts to help her fail and he becomes frustrated and acts as though he gives up on her.
Watching a holographic display of the incident earlier when Henry Gyrich blasted her,
Forge is surprised when Storm comes out of the guest room and tells him that he was kind, but should have let her drown.
While at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, the Professor tries to track Storm
through Cerebro after he detected her pain caused by the neutralizer device.
However, he tells Nightcrawler that he cannot.
Whatever caused the pain has severed their psychic rapport, but he insists that she is still alive somewhere.

Storm, meanwhile, is spending time with Forge.
She learns that Rogue has escaped government capture and comes to terms with the fact that she no longer has powers.
She finds the holograms that make Forge's home seem to be suspended in mid air unnerving.
Later when Forge is swimming in his pool, Storm decides to join him and they race across the pool.
Storm gets to the other side first and is shocked to find that Forge is a cyborg,
as his artificial hand and leg have been left by the side of the pool.

When Forge comes out of the pool he shows her the scars down the side of his body
and tells her that his injuries were a result of his missions during the Vietnam War.

He explains to her that after the accident he too lost his will to live,
but with time and healing he learned to move on with his life.

In Caldecott County, Mississippi, Val Cooper and her colleague Philip are winding down after their mission.
Their search for Rogue being a dead end after Storm's depowering caused their mutant detector to short out.
When Phil goes to his car to drive home, he is attacked by a Dire Wraith who quickly kills him and takes his form.
The Wraith disguised as Phil then leads its fellow Wraiths to Val's hotel room.
Gaining access through Val's trust in Phil, the creatures attack her with the intent of replacing her with a Dire Wraith.
Before they can, Rogue enters the room, having tracked down Cooper to sort out her problems with the government.
Val learns from the Wraith disguised as Phil that they intend to take over the world.
Rogue kills one of the Wraiths and Val is forced to shoot the alien posing as her dead colleague in the head.
As Val flees, Rogue strikes the last Wraith with her bare fist absorbing some of its memories
and she is instantly, violently disgusted by the vile alien thoughts she has absorbed.
This is detected by the Professor in New York, who suffers a mild psychic backlash from trying to read the alien thoughts in Rogue's mind.
As Val tries to flee the scene, Rogue, under the influence of Dire Wraith's thoughts, attempts to "replace" Val,
however only succeeds in absorbing some of her memories with her mutant powers before she stops herself.
She ends up absorbing all the plans that the Department of Mutant Affairs have
been plotting and how their Neutralizer stripped Storm of her powers.
Horrified, Rogue flees the scene vowing to make the government pay if
Storm was badly hurt and leaves to reunite herself with her fellow X-Men.

While back at Forge's home, Storm prepares to have a supper with Forge and decides to try on a dress he had delivered for her.
When both become nervous over their emerging feelings, Storm changes into something more comfortable.

As they are eating, Storm hears a thunderstorm outside and Forge turns on the buildings holographic projector to show her.
She is upset by this and Forge turns it off. Storm then confides in him about her recent changes from a “weather goddess”
to a darker and adventure seeking personality and how this recent change has affected her as well.
The two share a kiss, finally letting their emotions come forward. Their supper is interrupted when the phone rings.
When Forge answers it he tells Storm that it's business and leaves to take the call in another room.
Storm decides to take this as a moment to call the X-Men on the other line and tell them that she is okay.
She accidentally picks up the line that Forge is on and overhears Henry Gyrich telling Forge about how Rogue has been sighted.
She overhears them talking about the Neutralizer and Storm learns that Forge was the one who invented it.

Storm screams and tries to flee the building. Hearing her, Forge tries to follow after her to explain.
Rushing through his home, the holographic projector switches to a simulation of the Vietnam conflict.
Storm is disorientated and cannot find her way around and in a panic calls out to her goddess to help her.
Just then a lightning bolt strikes the side of Forge's building blasting open a wall to the outside balcony.
Storm rushes out there where Forge finally confronts her.
He tries to explain to her that the Neutralizer was not meant to be used the way it was and that he was only doing his job.
She refuses to believe him, and when he tells her that he too is a mutant,
she is horrified that one of her own kind could create a device against mutants.
She lashes out at him, rejecting his offers to help and cure her.
She punches him in the face, knocking him down and tells him that he's sold out of his race
and that he lives in his tower alone and unaware of how his indifference effects those around him.
She leaves, telling him that while her feet may never leave the ground again, she will someday fly again.

What would you guys say are the best issues from the X-Men run of 1963-1989 (#1-256)?

    My choices:

    10. X-Men #59 (August, 1969) - "Do or Die, Baby!"

    9. X-Men #212 (December, 1986) - "The Last Run"

    8. X-Men #241 (February, 1989) - "Fan the Flames!"

    7. X-Men #170 (June, 1983) - "Dancin' in the Dark"

    6. X-Men #226 (February, 1988) - "Go Tell the Spartans"

    5. X-Men #200 (December, 1985) - "The Trial of Magneto"

    4. X-Men #108 (December, 1977) - "Armageddon Now!"

    3. X-Men #150 (October, 1981) - "I, Magneto..."

    2. X-Men #186 (October, 1984) - "Lifedeath"

    1. X-Men #137 (September, 1980) - "The Fate of the Phoenix!"
