A major new study of social media sharing patterns shows that political polarization is more common among conservatives than liberals — and that the exaggerations and falsehoods emanating from right-wing media outlets such as Breitbart News have infected mainstream discourse.
Though the report, published by the Columbia Journalism Review, does an excellent job of laying out the challenge posed by Breitbart and its ilk, it is less than clear on how to counter it. Successfully standing up for truthful reporting in this environment “could usher in a new golden age for the Fourth Estate,” the authors write. But members of the public who care about such journalism are already flocking to news organizations like The New York Times, The Washington Post, and, locally, The Boston Globe, all of which have experienced a surge in paid subscriptions since the election of President Trump. That’s heartening, but there are no signs that it’s had any effect on the popularity or influence of the right-wing partisan media.
The CJR study, by scholars at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, at Harvard Law School, and the MIT Center for Civic Media, examined more than 1.25 million articles between April 1, 2015, and Election Day. What they found was that Hillary Clinton supporters shared stories from across a relatively broad political spectrum, including center-right sources such as The Wall Street Journal, mainstream news organizations like the Times and the Post, and partisan liberal sites like The Huffington Post and The Daily Beast.

    I'm sure we're all shocked.

Wow you have to be pretty horrible to make John Bolton flinch. Could Bolton be the whistleblower?

    NBCNews

While I don't think that Bolton is the actual whistleblower, it did cross my mind that some of the what we know about the whistleblower seemingly comes from what was Bolton's corner of things and that Bolton said something along the lines of that we would "Be Hearing From Him..."

LeBron James Says Daryl Morey Wasn’t ‘Educated’ About Hong Kong And China

The Lakers forward shared his thoughts on the Houston Rockets general manager’s tweet in support of anti-government protesters in Hong Kong. Short and sweet: just like the rest of the cowardly NBA which knuckled under to Beijing, this was all about Lebron putting his bank account first because Chinese NBA fans buy his jerseys and shoes.

LeBron James undermines values with comments on Daryl Morey and China

On behalf of the 327 million American citizens who generally believe that freedom is good and authoritarian regimes are less good, let me apologize to LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers.

It must have been a real inconvenience to take that 13-hour chartered flight to China last week and hang around a luxury hotel in Shanghai for five days while promotional appearances got cancelled. Surely it was awful to be in the middle of an international firestorm where the stakes were so high: Would preseason NBA games be played or not?

And to think, LeBron and his teammates were so disrupted all because Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey had the temerity to send a relatively anodyne tweet supporting a protest that pretty much every one of his countrymen — whether on the left or right side of the political spectrum — would agree with over the rights Hong Kongers were promised when the United Kingdom handed control of the territory over to China in 1997.
Because as James tweeted on Monday night, trying to clarify comments he made to the media earlier in the evening: “My team and this league just went through a difficult week. I think people need to understand what a tweet or statement can do to others. And I believe nobody stopped and considered what would happen. Could have waited a week to send it.”

Right on, LeBron. Millions in Hong Kong are fearful that their entire way of life is about to change, and thousands upon thousands of protestors are risking their lives to make a stand for their freedom and their future. Why would Morey think about them when your preseason vacation and your bank account is at stake? How selfish of him.

If only Morey had done what you did Monday, LeBron, and tacitly admit that the only thing that really matters is your ability to sell shoes and market "Space Jam 2" in a country of 1.4 billion, we could have had an intellectually honest discussion about doing business in China and the cost of free speech in a country where only propaganda is tolerated.

So unless LeBron takes the side everybody wants him to take on an issue he almost certainly doesn't know or care much about, he's undermining American values, yet it's the Chinese that are the brainwashed hivemind? Hong Kong has always been an island where unregulated capitalism has run amok, and these protests are nothing more than the privileged few fighting to protect their privileges, regardless of whatever flowery talk they may spew about freedom or democracy. Obviously the left and right are united on this issue because it goes against the interests of a geopolitical adversary, but this won't turn out any better than the Arab Spring, Ukraine, or Venezuela, and egging on the protesters with uncritical support from a safe distance is just irresponsible.

Remember when people thought that getting rid of Bolton might have actually been one of Trump's unicorn-like good decisions?
