Default Ackbar actor has some fun withTLJ and Holdo character.

"I'm like, "Who is this Holdo woman? Nobody knows her, no one is invested in her-who is she? Why is she saving the fleet?" If anyone was gonna save the fleet it'd be Ackbar [laughs]

I agree here is the link. The interview is all in good fun. https://comicbook.com/starwars/2019/...the-last-jedi/
"The Marvel EIC Chair has a certain curse that goes along with it: it tends to drive people insane, and ultimately, out of the business altogether. It is the notorious last stop for many staffers, as once you've sat in The Big Chair, your pariah status is usually locked in." Christopher Priest

He was laughing, but he wasn't joking. He's absolutely right. Who in the purple hell was Admiral Holdo, anyway? If Disney was going to have the classic characters in the new trilogy it was a mistake to **** on them like they did.

""Who is this Holdo woman? Nobody knows her, no one is invested in her-who is she?" This is really a change from storytelling in a single standalone movie versus longer form movies where there is more time to build who the characters are and an emotional connection with the character.

When the A New Hope first was released and Obi-Wan is killed - you could say the same thing. But the reason his death was effective is that the audience sees Luke's reaction and through the character building so far in the film. There are plenty of standalone films not based on IPs who can effectively kill of a character and have that death mean something to the audience.

There's nothing wrong with Holdo's character or Laura Dern in TLJ. Rian Johnson is a filmmaker. Preparing for TLJ, he watched classic films to inspire him. What he couldn't have known was how much of a change there would be with so much of the audience wanting series of movies building connections to characters. Not just a small group of geeks feeling that way, but a large segment of the audience who right now are losing their minds about Avengers Endgame and Game of Thrones. Not just geeks, but average people who have never read a comic in their life.

There is an expectation that movies like Star Wars should have intricate plotlines and character development. That's not the way movies have been usually made. Back when TLJ was being written, a discussion of using Ackbar instead of Holdo would have included issues with how the audience wouldn't be able to connect with Ackbar since it's a character in a mask where you can't see his eyes and how much more Laura would be able to connect with the audience. Those types of elements would have been more important to a filmmaker like Rian Johnson than how the audience feels about a character based on their past connection through a variety of media.

Kane I think only played Ackbar briefly for a few lines in TLJ..I think he's better known as the Clone Wars announcer/Yularen/Yoda. Erik Bauersfeld was the voice of actor in ROTJ and TFA, and died around the time TLJ started production so Tom was called in.

Tim Rose has always been the guy in the suit.

Holdo as many other points in the last Jedi is a good idea bad executed, I think that we are supposed to get suspicious of Holdo and support Poe to in the end see that Holdo "was right" and is loyal and a hero buuuut, the execution was terrible.

No matter who is Holdo, if Ackbar is there, a hero of the last war with more than 30 years of experience and the knowledge and trust of the fleet, he should be put in charge, also if this was going to be his final scene after all those years, he should have be gone as a pro not as collateral damage. Holdo commits several mistakes that can be excused as a lack of experience dealing with insubordination, and being put in charge just because they are in an emergency, but again this excuse loss credibility since Ackbar was there with all his years of experience and never was even consulted not mentioned. As result people gets enraged for the meaningless death of Akbar and how he was skipped in the chain of command and feels nothing about what was supposed to be an heroic sacrifice.

The last jedi has a terrible problem, they have a rich and complex universe already developed and a ton of characters already loved but those characters are unceremoniously killed and disrespected to bring focus to the "new and young" crew obtaining the contrary effect, people hates the new characters because blames them for the mistreatment of the old and already loved ones.

He's having fun, but I think he is touching on just how worthless the character was. Her demeanor towards Poe doesn't make any sense and her "sacrifice" was worthless, why not have a droid do the same?

That's kind of what they did with the Legends New Jedi Order books, bringing him back and making him fleet commander again, although he's old and frail, (and dies shortly thereafter of natural causes). TFA and TLJ do show him to be pretty much the same way he was in ROTJ, on the other hand. Guess they stuck with the Star Wars films trope that non-humans seem to not age that fast (Yoda, Maz, Chewie etc).
