My graphic novel group at the library is having an upcoming discussion on the role of mothers in comics. They will be covering a lot of artsy books like Alison Bechdel's Are you my mother? (I might suggest Mom's cancer)
With mothers day stories coming up : What are some great stories involving mothers? Who are some of the best and worst mothers in comics history?
All too often the mother dies young and is used as a plot device. I must read up on the role of mothers in Joseph Campbells Hero of a thousand faces, they are often minimal in stories there as well.
Newsarama had a good list :
Jesse's mother and grandmother (Preacher)
Hippolyta (Wonder woman)
Jessica's recent motherhood (Spider-woman), mums from Runaways (what are the TV ones like?), backstabbing mum in the Blade movie etc.etc.
