Default Happy 80th birthday Denny O誰eil!

Batman isn稚 the only DC icon who turned 80 this year. The man helped bring the DARK back to the Dark Knight and wrote some of the best stories of the Bronze Age. Happy birthday sir!

    Happy Birthday Mr. Denny!

"My Batman" is the Batman you and Adams gave us. Whatever anybody says about subsequent creators, it was you that made Batman cool again in a post-grade school reader market.

Denny, Len Wein, and co. were the first generation of writers who grew up as actual comic book fans and it definitely showed. They knew what an honor it was to write these characters and understood what made the characters special. Hence Denny bringing Batman back to his darker roots.

I saw Denny at a Comic Con panel many years ago and he told some amazing stories about his start with DC. He talked about how the people running DC at the time were so out of touch. They refused to change the 1950s strategy and refused to acknowledge that Marvel was, as he put it “feeding them their lunch.” Lee and Kirby has revolutionized comic books but the DC brass brushed it off. It was creators like Denny and Neal Adams that had to figuratively slap them in the face and show them that the genre had evolved. I’m sure we can also thank Julie Schwartz for being the editor that listened to them.
