Funny enough, Kieron Gillen's Iron Man run tried something like this later on, with each ring going to a different individual, although by that point, the rings were hardcoded with the Mandarin's hatred for Iron Man and so turned their bearers against him as well.

Hmm... didn't read that, but I probably read about it on a wiki a while back.
