Yeah, Bendis books sell nowhere near as much as they used to back in his prime. It was the same for some of his Marvel work before he left.

It's so obvious that I think the only reason for getting Bendis was backroom politics in that there was a desire to get rid of Jurgens/Tomasi (and Jon) never mind the fact those two writers were bringing in more money with double shipping and higher sales while probably being cheaper than Bendis. But than again a lot of DC's current policy with the new writers isn't about maximizing profits but driven more by egos and politics in wanting to get rid of writers that stuck with Rebirth in favor of ex-Marvel people like Bendis, Fraction, KSD, etc.

I think there was probably some kind of publicity angle involved in the Bendis changeover. It would've been impossible for that not to be a factor.

He did Ultimate Spider-Man and did the unthinkable KILL OFF the lead and replace him with a new biracial character. He built that guy up by himself for 5 volumes. Then made sure he was active in events.

Then along came a girl named Riri.

And I think that's part of the problem with Miles now that he's in 616. He's at his narrative strongest in a world with a dead Peter Parker and he's the only Spider-Man, just look at Into the Spider-Verse, but now he's in the main Marvel universe as just another Spider-Man in a world where Peter Parker is still alive.

It makes him difficult to use faithfully in adaptions where Peter's the lead and the people who write Peter and Miles' solo books basically just ignore or don't really ever acknowledge that there's another Spider-Man because their stories have nothing to do with each other.

But I guess Miles has his own book, is on a good team book, and is free for guest appearances which is all that matters in the long-run.

Or how he took Hawkeye off the table for other writers following Disassembled. Or killed off Scott Lang. Most of the stuff that he credits to Bendis wasn't because of Bendis himself, but rather the licensing and adaptation machinery that was in place at Marvel or at Sony. It's rather misleading to credit Into the Spider-Verse for Bendis. Lord and Miller and people under them deserve the credit for Spider-Verse.

If anything the best of his career is in the past. His runs on Superman, YJ, Defenders and Iron Man shows he no longer has the star power he once possessed. It's unfortunate DC doesn't realize this when they are so quick to dump Johns despite Rebirth being a success.

Riri is rumored to be making her journey to the big screen and was rumored before SFFH, Endgame, or Infinity War.

Ronin made it into live action in Endgame.

Taskmaster is gonna make his appearance in Black Widow.

He's still rumored to be a part of that Kitty Pryde movie.

And right now he's getting praised for something in Endgame b/c it was in his Avengers run.

I say this all to say there was no backroom politics to hire Bendis, b/c to a company he is still appealing, his sales might not be what it used to, but he's still a name, any publicity is good publicity (and when I say publicity I mean his name is always in people's mouth for whatever reason), his characters (and some of his ideas) are popping up one after the other outside of the comic medium, and that's appealing for a company especially a company that's owned by an entertainment business that wants to use your characters to make money.

People like Bendis and I guess Geoff John's (and I'm sure other writers) have more appeal than just comic sales and readership.

It's just that "respecting every character and not dragging any of them down for a story" is not something Bendis is known for.

What are you talking about? That is nothing close to his run of Avengers. You might as well say Hickman had a hand in it because he had Thanos in Infinity and he created the Black Order or Shooter because he had a similar scene with Hulk in Secret Wars. If anything Starlin is the one that deserves the lion share of credit for Infinity War and Endgame followed by the Russos and Markus/McFeely for making a lot of the story from whole cloth.

It seems like there is a propensity to exaggerate Bendis's accomplishment and discount the fact that a lot of what he did was a result of Marvel or Sony or Fox and a result of Marvel tv and movie rights splintered in the hands of these companies while downplaying the actual people who created the movies/shows.
