It's so obvious that I think the only reason for getting Bendis was backroom politics in that there was a desire to get rid of Jurgens/Tomasi (and Jon) never mind the fact those two writers were bringing in more money with double shipping and higher sales while probably being cheaper than Bendis. But than again a lot of DC's current policy with the new writers isn't about maximizing profits but driven more by egos and politics in wanting to get rid of writers that stuck with Rebirth in favor of ex-Marvel people like Bendis, Fraction, KSD, etc.

I think there was probably some kind of publicity angle involved in the Bendis changeover. It would've been impossible for that not to be a factor.

DC sure did milk it with those 2 page "Bendis is Coming" spreads in every issue they released leading up to it.

Lets see.... you have a man who took dead properties called Luke Cage & Jessica Jones.

He did Ultimate Spider-Man and did the unthinkable KILL OFF the lead and replace him with a new biracial character. He built that guy up by himself for 5 volumes. Then made sure he was active in events.

Then along came a girl named Riri.

    Under Bendis-
    Jessica Jones
    1 tv series
    7 video game appearances
    3 ongoings
    3 team books including Avengers

    Luke Cage
    1 tv series
    2 ongoings
    14 video game appearances

    Miles Morales
    4 ongoings
    2 minis
    3 team books
    Oscar winner
    14 video game appearances
1 New York Times best seller novel

And Bendis did it without RUINING another character.
NO other Spider-person got RUINED for Miles Morales.
NO other female heroine got RUINED for Jessica Jones.
NO other black male got RUINED for Luke or Miles. Let alone any MALE.
NO franchise got RUINED for Defenders.

Maybe the editorial offices for Flash, Titans and ESPECIALLY Green Lantern need to take notes on that.

A fairly consistent criticism of Bendis is that he ruins a ton of characters in order for a story to work, the prime example being Scarlet Witch. Other than Miles not ruining Peter Parker (which would be fairly hard to do, as Peter is the most popular Marvel character) none of what you cite is much of an accomplishment. Why would any writer ruin She-Hulk to promote Jessica Jones?

Not seeing any lessons from Bendis to learn here for any of those franchises. Jones is an entirely new creation, Luke Cage is independent of any legacy and Miles Morales' setup was originally that he was in an alternative universe where Parker was dead, thus allowing him to be his own thing whilst Parker fans had their own hero to read in 616.

I guess putting Wally West in an alternative universe where Barry is still dead would work well, definitely better than what we've got now.

And I think that's part of the problem with Miles now that he's in 616. He's at his narrative strongest in a world with a dead Peter Parker and he's the only Spider-Man, just look at Into the Spider-Verse, but now he's in the main Marvel universe as just another Spider-Man in a world where Peter Parker is still alive.

It makes him difficult to use faithfully in adaptions where Peter's the lead and the people who write Peter and Miles' solo books basically just ignore or don't really ever acknowledge that there's another Spider-Man because their stories have nothing to do with each other.

But I guess Miles has his own book, is on a good team book, and is free for guest appearances which is all that matters in the long-run.

Or how he took Hawkeye off the table for other writers following Disassembled. Or killed off Scott Lang. Most of the stuff that he credits to Bendis wasn't because of Bendis himself, but rather the licensing and adaptation machinery that was in place at Marvel or at Sony. It's rather misleading to credit Into the Spider-Verse for Bendis. Lord and Miller and people under them deserve the credit for Spider-Verse.

If anything the best of his career is in the past. His runs on Superman, YJ, Defenders and Iron Man shows he no longer has the star power he once possessed. It's unfortunate DC doesn't realize this when they are so quick to dump Johns despite Rebirth being a success.

Well one thing that can't be denied by Bendis detractors is that's he's been successful with getting his characters and his ideas on screen.

His Powers comic went to live action.

His Scarlet comic is in development for live action.

Jessica Jones went to live action.

He might not have created Luke Cage but he had a hand in defining him and that character went on to live action.

Miles Morales made it to the big screen.

Riri is rumored to be making her journey to the big screen and was rumored before SFFH, Endgame, or Infinity War.

Ronin made it into live action in Endgame.

Taskmaster is gonna make his appearance in Black Widow.

He's still rumored to be a part of that Kitty Pryde movie.

And right now he's getting praised for something in Endgame b/c it was in his Avengers run.

I say this all to say there was no backroom politics to hire Bendis, b/c to a company he is still appealing, his sales might not be what it used to, but he's still a name, any publicity is good publicity (and when I say publicity I mean his name is always in people's mouth for whatever reason), his characters (and some of his ideas) are popping up one after the other outside of the comic medium, and that's appealing for a company especially a company that's owned by an entertainment business that wants to use your characters to make money.

People like Bendis and I guess Geoff John's (and I'm sure other writers) have more appeal than just comic sales and readership.
My priority is black female characters; everything else is secondary.

    ~~

Marvel: Miles Morales, Riri Williams, Ororo Munroe, Thor, Quentin Quire.
DC Comics: Vixen, Batman, Bat Family, John Stewart, Roy Harper, Tempest, Poison Ivy, Raven.
Comics: Y: The Last Man, Justice League America (2009), Ultimate Comics: All New Spider-Man (2011)
Ships: Thororo/ThunderStorm, Vixen/hasn't been created, Jason Todd/Kathy Duquesne.

Yeah I wouldn't deny that Bendis is an asset to the company, DC is already seeing the benefits as shown by the announcements of the Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen books, alongside all Alex Maleev coming over. It's just that "respecting every character and not dragging any of them down for a story" is not something Bendis is known for.

Bendis didn't create Taskmaster. The character first appeared back in 1980.

What are you talking about? That is nothing close to his run of Avengers. You might as well say Hickman had a hand in it because he had Thanos in Infinity and he created the Black Order or Shooter because he had a similar scene with Hulk in Secret Wars. If anything Starlin is the one that deserves the lion share of credit for Infinity War and Endgame followed by the Russos and Markus/McFeely for making a lot of the story from whole cloth.

It seems like there is a propensity to exaggerate Bendis's accomplishment and discount the fact that a lot of what he did was a result of Marvel or Sony or Fox and a result of Marvel tv and movie rights splintered in the hands of these companies while downplaying the actual people who created the movies/shows.

That didn't seem to be very well-received from what I heard.

Do you think Netflix Cage owed a lot to Bendis' Cage?
Taskmaster is gonna make his appearance in Black Widow.
Bendis didn't create Taskmaster. Even if he's black like he was in Ultimate I think he'll owe more to 616 Taskmaster (could be wrong on that).
He's still rumored to be a part of that Kitty Pryde movie.
    Pretty sure that's been canceled.

Bendis has definitely brought over some of his high-profile friends and seems to be doing a good job of revamping the Superman line.

Although that's kind of different beast then "selling well."

Snyder got a big boost from the new readers coming in for New52, and Batman being one of the two titles with the least changes -which means less drop offs.

Too bad they didn't use that approach with all their books.
