So, do I regret dedicating my life to Starfleet vs marrying and raising a biological family? No, but that doesn't mean I regret not being part of your life If I had known I would have been there for you and happy to be there and found a way to balance the two.
That definitely seems in line for Picard, and is precisely why the scene didn't work for me. It was supposed to show us that Jack tried to connect with his biological father but was rebuffed, despite what he said earlier about never being interesting. It's supposed to make Jack look softer and give us pause to think that Crusher might have been right...but it was such a warm, feel good scene of Picard interacting with young cadets that it just didn't work in execution.

If they had shown us Jack going to Starfleet command and trying to get an appointment with Picard's office only to get a pat response about Jean Luc having an important meeting and can't be bothered to meet with him, only to see Picard palling it up with the cadets then it might have worked better.

The bar scene worked perfectly for me.
It showed how married Picard is to Starfleet, and that the cadets were like his children who looked to him for advice and wisdom. Jack saw that Picard already had a family, then Picard outright stated it.
Picard's momentary indecision showed that he really had to think about the question and was most likely swayed by his adoring young fans gushing over him so he went full pro-Starfleet. Had he been alone, I think he'd say that having a family would have been nice but Starfleet is his family now.

Seen two episodes now and I’m confirmed for Captain Shaw stan. Love someone finally standing up against the core cast's bullshit.

He is an enjoyable reasonable contrarian in my opinion.

Star Fleet needs their Jellico types.

He also had many issues with his real family of course, even before Picard season 2 revealed his parents issues.

Normally, I'd go with "Leave no one behind" but Shaw is right. They were endangering the whole crew because of a situation they caused under false pretenses but we are supposed to side with Picard/ Riker/ Crusher and see Shaw as a jerk just for trying to protect his crew from harm in a mission they were never assigned.

Now, blaming Picard for Locutus is different because, as with Sisko, he has no comprehension of what happened and has that assumption that a strong enough person could have resisted. Or, maybe, that kind of grief doesn't care whether the hate is rational.

As a Starfleet captain, I'm sure Shaw intellectually knows exactly what assimilation is and what was done to Picard in particular but emotionally can't separate Picard from Locutus.

Shaw is still haunted every day because he saw 40 friends and a Lt. die while he got to live. I think he sees Picard living his life as it appears unaffected by the 11,000 deaths at Wolf 359 and 1, he doesn't understand it because if it had been him, he would have ate a phaser a long time ago from the guilt and 2 the fact Picard hasn't probably angered him.

    Shaw was randomly chosen, too.

    Random fact...
The weak point on all ships named Intrepid is the port nacelle!

The 25th Century Intrepid does look like a true successor to the 22nd Century version just with an added secondary hall.

To me the Picard version of the Intrepid looks like a regular "primary/secondary hull" design which went on a radical diet gone wrong.

Perhaps it's because the deflector and warp core part are placed so far below the saucer, even though many past designs show that there is no issue with having those directly connected to it. So there is a lot of stretched hull parts and empty space.

Well dang, I thought I was too old to get chocked up over simple nostalgia. When Jack and Seven were doing a rundown of the ships...wow.

    Spoilers/Theory:

    spoilers:
    1) I assumed they, well, cremated Picard's remains when they put him in the golem body. But instead they put it in a Section 13 blacksite (which is also home, curiously, to Kirk's remains).
    2) This neuropathic disease that ultimately killed Picard (or rather his human body), Jack inherited it. theory: this isn't a disease per se, I think it's the ability to pick up on signals, but if the mind doesn't understand the signals it can be mistaken for delusion, madness. Signals = whatever call or beacon that Changlings send out to each other. Maybe without using it properly it kills you in the end, like a muscle atrophying needing to eventually be amputated. The Changlings want someone with this rare ability (Jack), and failing that...a reanimated corpse will probably do. Picard vs Locutus incoming!
    3) So this new golem is a gestalt of Lal, Data, Lore, and B-4. Wonder what he'll call himself when he's fully integrated.
    end of spoilers

They're definitely making a new series with Sydney, Jack and Seven (maybe Shaw too.) And I'm perfectly ok with that considering they had great chemistry in this episode.
