Yeah, I haven't heard horrible anywhere.
There was that one guy in this thread who watched a completely different version of this from everyone else where the Romuluns and Borg team up to fight the Federation or something mad like that.
I wonder if the Romulans using Borg tech is sort of a 'canon migrant' of sorts from a lot of the '09 "Expanded Universe" material, which stated that the reason for the Narada's appearence and vast weaponry-which, apart from the drill seem kind of weird for a "mining vessel"-were the result of the Tal Shiar upgrading the ship with borg technology.
Going a bit OT here, but is the Tal Shiar sort of a nod to Francis Ford Copolla's sister and Rocky and Godfather actress Talia Shire? I know that the Trek writers have occasionally had fun with little name in-jokes: Sha-Ka-Ree for example being Sean Connery, originally considered for Sybok in V, and of course Abrams using his grandfather's name (I think) Kelvin as the name of the ship. Plus somebody in TNG was obviously a huge anime fan as the show has many references to late 80s/90's anime-Dirty Pair, Ranma 1/2, Uresei Yatsura and of course Akira and the Miyazaki films.

It's still a little slow moving but the end promises that things will move a little faster going forward
(14 years ago)
Picard: Wait a second..it's fourteen years ago but they aren't going to try to use special effects to make me look younger? Screw you show! I guess I should be thankful, look at how Data turned out.
Raffi: Uh...Did you get the ships?
Picard: Nah, no surprise there. Everyone found out last episode that 14 species threatened to quit if we helped them 14 out of 150. Which is funny because where will they go? The Klingon Empire? The Dominion? Form their own thing and immediately become the new kid that gets shoved into a locker?
Raffi: What happened in there JL? I can't do this without you JL! Does it sound weird that I keep calling you JL?
Picard: Yes.
Raffi: Well, I have to go. I'm fired. The next time you see me I will come off as a bitter ex wife that had a terrible lawyer so she didn't get the house after the split. I will also vape.
Present Day
Doctor Jurati: Just sitting down at the park. Minding my own business.
Commodore Oh: I would to speak with you about..
Doctor Jurati: Ha! Ha! Wow...
Commodore Oh: What?!
Doctor Jurati: The sunglasses...you have lost all the credibility you built up last episode.
Commodore Oh: Maybe it's a hint...maybe I'm sensitive to light.
Doctor Jurati: Really? We are going down that road again?! Sigh...
A ship that looks like it came from the videogame "Destiny"
Picard: Captain Rios?
EMH: Nah, just an EMH. Captain Solo..er..Captain Mal..uh...Captain Rios is this way..
Picard Home
Picard: I'll miss this place. You the dog and our butler.
Laris: The butler? You mean my husband?
The House is attacked!
Picard: Ugh. Let's hope this action is actually well done and fits with the show.
It is!
Picard: Hey where the heck was my dog during this fight?
Borg cube
Blah blah Borg religion. Blah blah chosen one.
Narissa: Anything new?
Narek: Nope.
Narissa: Ok.
A ship that looks like it came from the videogame "Destiny"
Picard: Okay time to go. The fans are getting impatient!
They really should have shown the first two episodes together. It was still pretty good. Still took too long. I liked the episode still want to know where it's going.

I'm enjoying the show so far and I'm fine with the pacing.
The intro music lacks any kind of emotional heft, though. I get that the show is a bit more downbeat but it's also about a very passionate individual fighting for universal equality. Would like the music to inspire on some level.
Biggest take-aways from the episode...
>This confirms it: the first 3 episodes should have been a 2 hour opener.
>We've seen at least one Romulan Borg before in VOY 'Unity', and he was chugging along just fine.
>Alien Incest Overload!!!! I really hate these creepy, overtly sexual brother/sister relationships..
>Soji's boring.
>The Romulan Housekeepers are really earning their keep.
>Can you really see shooting stars above you while you're in orbit?
>Picard's got a lot of very broken people around him now. Can he Speech them into being better?
>My favourite characters: the Romulan Housekeepers, the General Emergency Hologram, and Dr. Agnes.
>Dr. Agnes showing up at just the right time to get a disruptor and kill a Tal Shiar operative? Suspicious.
>I hope Free Cloud is in a nebula.
>Yeah, the theme music isn't in any way exciting.
>The Romulan theme is wonderful! I'm glad to hear it!
>The TNG theme remains sexy! <3
>Picard saying 'Engage!' may or may not have made me moist.
>How... painfully generic is that starship? There are so many cool designs that could have been used.
Anyhoo... Looking forward to the Romulan Samurai next episode plus TOS Warbirds!

And Maddox started the "war."
There's also a rumor that the Crushers will be in season 2 but Beverly will be dead, so a flashback I guess?

I do not love Raffi calling him "JL".

"Something's off about this whole business JL"
"What happened in there JL?"
"There has to be something, some wild desperate solution JL that's what you do!"
"I can't do this without you JL!"
"Might have been nice to hear from you a time or two in there JL, not because you think I know an off-the-books pilot with an unregistered starship."
"I will not go down another rabbit hole with you JL!"
I can live with her saying JL all the time, it's the vaping that bugs me.

She's self-destructive with mental issues and possible gambling problems. Of COURSE she vapes space weed while guzzling wine!
