I heard a similar comparison between Bioshock and the Earth 2 Capital Ship in Discovery .

    >So Discovery's Big Bad was evil AI. Picard's Big Bad seems to be Evil AI, too. Star Trek has already started recycling plots? Tsk.
    >That line about the ex-Borg having a new queen... and she's Romulan...
Just a metaphorical way of saying that the Romulans control the ex-Borg's fate or also a way to say that Sela's taken control of the former Empire finally?

They've done a couple of those cool overlaying faces shots now, but last night's was easily the most powerful. Was this directed by Frakes again? (I skip the opening credits after the Seven spoiler)
    No, not Frakes.
The broken nature of every single person on the show is really depressing. One of the hallmarks of Trek was that people would go through horrific traumas but be able to survive and thrive after thanks to science and friendship; modern Trek seems to have done away with that. Perhaps the point is to show that the Federation and its people are also falling apart just like the former Romulan Star Empire, paving the way for Discovery Ascendant in the far future to rebuild the Systems Commonweal... Sorry, wrong Roddenberry show.

Or the point is the Federation and the characters have lost their way and need to find it again by finding something to stand for. "A line must be drawn here!"
    Sounds perfect.

Well, at least the Discovery isn't sentient like Andromeda. Oh wait, it became sentient in that one Short Trek titled "Calypso"...that takes place in the future.

The way they snapped at Elrond Jr...I get it now. He's Elf Wesley. Stewart has some control over this show, I'm guessing this was his idea to have a Wesley 2.0 on the show.

Writers and producers talk about Picard returning to a Borg cube.
Hugh being a kind and nurturing influence is mentioned... which for me is confirmation that he'll die horrible. :|

We're in the middle of their journey, not the end of it. I think by the season finale we'll see whether or not they're still broken people thanks to this newfound bond. Or, that they're still broken people but with renewed hope towards life once again, since trauma never really leaves you (for example, Sisko in DS9 never got over the death of his wife, but rather that he learned it was a part of him, not an obstacle. Accepting that helped him accept DS9, and eventually Kassidy Yates. He's still a cracked man, but he's accepted those cracks as part of his own growth, that he could only succeed in his career and in love by incorporating lessons from his history, each crack a part of his whole).

Raffi may be drinking herself stupid, but there's a reason why she's sticking around when she could have easily left for Earth -- she's surrounded by 2 old friends and a couple of new ones now.

Rios was a loner after burning out of Starfleet, but he seems to be regaining an appreciation to be around people. That his old colleague Raffi's on board and his romance with Jurati is growing points towards being less anti-social than before.

I'd like to see Elnor get more screentime, but we've seen that he was an angry young man reunited with a mentor and father figure, choosing to eschew cultural rigidity to help him on his cause.

Soji's self-discovery, of course, is the central mystery of the show, so I'll leave it at that.

Picard has one of my favorite, simplest moments from ep. 1 -- the instant he straps on his 90s-era Starfleet badge, he goes from retiree who's past his prime with no idea what to do with his days, to regaining his purpose in senior life and being reinvigorated thanks to realizing he still has self- worth to give. (That last part hits me pretty hard bc my work often involves working with lonely, isolated seniors, and to see them get motivated again because of a sense of community or common good is the best)

That leaves Jurati, who presents herself initially as someone without those human failings, or that those failings are external, but it emphasizes her being a double agent.

Along with Seven (vigilante) and Hugh (rehabilitator), to me the point of the show isn't to show broken people at the worst of their lives, it's to show how people cope or rebuild from it and regain the proper health to rediscover purpose and drive, and that that journey can look like a variety of ways.

I, too, hope this is the case. I hope these people get better... except Jurati. She's a cold blooded murderer now. She deserves whatever's coming to her.

I was really worried that Jurati was going to be Tilly 2.0. I can only handle Tilly in measured doses, and I think that she's earnest but gets too annoying even for the viewer too quick. Too cutesy.

Boy, was I wrong about Jurati.

    Ugh.

Oh does a mindmeld against Jurati's will...And she doesn't report this to anyone? Someone assaults her mind and she...just takes it and then does whatever she wants because she showed her a future that may or may not cone to pass?

Hey Elnor, stop bringing swords to phaser fights.

    Hugh's death was so unnecessary

Picard is being berated over something he had no control over yet again? Must be a day that ends in "Y"

The crew still hasn't figured out that Jurati murdered someone yet? Really?!

Riker and Troi's creepy kid draws pictures of Soji while she sleeps? Yikes.

Well at least Seven Of Nine is back next episode so we can see her go action hero and kill a bunch of people.

Oh, and Rick Berman wants to know if we are enjoying the show https://mobile.twitter.com/berman_ri...59036658487296

I give up. I cannot make it through another second of this crap. I cannot deal with this overly violent, melodramatic, convoluted Star Trek.

it's one thing to say the Federation is different now, but the writers don't even know the difference between Federation and Starfleet let alone BASIC ST canon. this show and Discovery aren't really made for Star Trek fans, they're for people who've only seen or heard about Star Trek peripherally but never actually watched a full season's worth of episodes. they clearly forgot about the former Borg Romulans from VOY. Data and Picard were never best friends!! Picard made Data kill his kid in TNG! I want this all to be a bad dream. I hate this neo-fascist Federation as some sort of allegory for the real world, yeah I get it, but without optimism or hope for a brighter future, there's no point. Star Trek isn't supposed to be shooting and explosions.

I was waiting til 7 showed up. wow ! super sick that she became a badass sexy mercenary instead of what she always wanted to do which was to use her intellect to help the rest of the universe. Honestly surprised Patrick Stewart agreed to sign onto this, but I guess we were never going to end up getting anything worthwhile anyway. it sucks being a Trek fan nowadays, really does. they took everything I love about this franchise and chucked it in a food processor.

It's annoying that this **** seems to go live at 8am. Websites are running reviews before I'm even awake.

That's not what happened at all. It's ironic that you'd post that after saying the people involved in this new show don't know canon lol.
