How would a few seconds of extra Nova fighting have helped the story?

It wouldn't have. If you're plan was to never introduce Nova's as we know them in the comics. However a few seconds or even a minute or two to showcase powered Nova's would have made the Cinematic Universe as a whole better. And would have eradicated the need to now explain why there weren't powered Novas around before.

To put it plainly had the movie just used powered Novas with little to no explanation on how they were powered or doing what they did, the audience would've simply accepted it as par for the course. Because we're being introduced to so many new and amazing sci fi concepts that one more is easy to accept. Especially given everything else going on. These guys are powered guardians from Xanthar who were at war with the Kree, but now have a tentative alliance. Cool that's enough to move further. But now they've established the ground work and in a future movie should they go against what they've already established they'd have to spent time explaining the how and why of it.

I agree. They would not have had to explain the powered Corpsmen at all.

But then there would have been no need for the Guardians to save them. I guess that would not have fit their narrative. With the success of the Guardians, and Xandar's involvement in this movie, the seeds have been planted for Nova. I hope they do this.
