Justice League: Animal Man, Mera, Swamp Thing, Abigail Arcane, Shazam, Barry Allen. Individually they all have different obligations, rulers, crime fighters, guardians, mediocre Jr. High student, but together they protect the Earth and the fundamental forces that govern it. Every member is Earth born and works for a higher power, a higher authority, so what does it mean when the government tells you not to do something, but facets of life itself demand that you do it anyway? And what does it mean if those higher powers demand you betray one of your own? Is the Justice League truly out to protect the Earth or does each force have their own status quo changing agenda? Billy Batson has no idea, but he better find out before they're forced to confront The Spectre!

Justice League of America- Of course, America needs its own Justice League, just in case. Hal Jordan, Captain Atom, Cyborg, Star Girl, Vixen, and Parasite are out to save the day and look good doing it, but things get messy when they have to investigate a threat from Atlantis! And what of the warning of alien invasion from Booster Gold!?

Superman->Superman Corps: Clark Kent, college drop out, underground folk singer, all around good guy, and secretly the most powerful hero in the world. Despite being surrounded by good friends Lana Lang and Pete Ross and having a modest fan base, Clark never feels truly accepted by the world he chose to protect. In fact, despite all the good he has accomplished Superman is mostly untrusted, but Clark finally gets his opportunity to connect with someone when he begins to discover other aliens that have decided to call Earth their home, including Dru-Zod and his adopted daughter Kara. Year 2, after stopping General Zod's bid to replace the spirits of Earth's inhabitants with the corrupted souls of Kryptonians from his Phantom Zone, Superman is finally accepted by the world at large and has an opportunity to spread his wings. Clark, Mon-el, Supergirl, Superwoman (Lana, enhanced by a Kryptonian phantom), and Martian Manhunter are the Superman Corps, and they have stepped up none too soon. Will they have to step in if the Justice League collapses on itself? What's this about Red Lanterns? Who are the Outsiders and what's their beef with Superman?

Batman and the Outsiders- Batman doesn't trust the Justice League, and he doesn't trust the Superman Corps. These loud inefficient emotionally unstable heroes could prove to be Earth's biggest threat. Batman knows best. Batman, Batwoman, Black Lightning, Metamorpho, Big Barda, and Lex Luthor decide to protect the world their own way, from the shadows. Can Lex Luthor be trusted, or is he pushing the team in a colder more dangerous direction under the ruse of logic and objectivity, and if so, can Nightwing set the team straight?

Event: 1947- an Alien ship comes to Earth on a mission of diplomacy. The alien is imprisoned, experimented on, killed, and dissected. Today- Tension have come to a head with the greatest heroes on the planet turning against each other. Things only get worse when people begin to fall prey to uncontrollable impulses of rage and anger. The world is tearing itself apart. Atrocitus has come. There may be one person alone that can prevent the world's collapse, but can Steve Trevor reach her before it's too late?

Then you get your explosion of new books. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Justice League Unlimited, Justice League Light, Nightwing and the Outsiders, Red Lantern, and Atlantis

Honestly its hard to see the point in doing an Ultimate line and having the same multiple generations with the first being veterans with family. That's exactly what the main line is right now. Its essentially becoming what the pre-Crisis Earth-Two was.

Pitch a reimagining of DC line 10 years(maybe 20) into the future but that future is the present

Titans- Nightwing, Cyborg, Kaldur, Starfire, Beast Boy, Donna Troy, Raven, Wally West as fully flesh heroes out in their mid 30s as the world's greatest heroes

JSA- Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman,Flash, Green Lantern coming out of superhero retirement to deal with an old threat who has resurfaced

World's Finest The story of first year Batman(Damian Wayne) and Superman(Jon Kent) can they handle the pressure of the mantle being passed to them

I think the biggest problem with the EO line is the "put out a volume whenever you feel like it" model. We've had three Superman books; the last one being over five years ago. And it doesn't look like we're going to get another one anytime soon. And JMS announced he's going into permanent retirement so there probably won't be another one. The third Batman book is on indefinite hold until Johns and Frank can get around to it. Morrison seems to be the only one able to work on a semi-schedule. This isn't working. Sacred Knight is correct in that only Superman and WW really stood out in the New 52.

I've always liked the idea of a world that starts in the 1930s and moves forward from there. I've had kind of the idea of a "noir" Earth. A Golden Age Superman that only leaps an 1/8th a mile, at least at first. You could have a Batman that doesn't have a Robin. Drives a roadster, is engaged to Julie Madison who doesn't know he's Bat-Man. This would also open the door to a divergent history. What happens when Superman becomes powerful enough to fly into Europe and singlehandedly overthrow Hitler? Does history take a different turn? Ideas that don't work in a single contained story.

Unfortunately, going in a vastly different direction would probably fail.

In the past 30 plus years, I learned the too many people hate change with an empurpled passion.

Don't believe me? We had Wonder Woman with covered legs and blue boots for minutes before a loud minority scared DC. Superman and Batman have returned to the ridiculous outer-underwear.

Too many comic readers want their grandfather's comic books...and then don't understand why this doesn't appeal to today's young.

Instead of going in a vastly different direction, try a direction like a cartoon aimed at very young audiences (NOT Teen Titans Go); yeah, some variations but the characters are taken seriously with carefully planned stories.

I'd have to knock out the exact details, but I was thinking about this conversation and I'd do Ultimate Superman like this; designed specifically to be different from the classic, with a (mostly) new/different cast, but still built around the core themes that made Superman a global icon. Because if you're not going to be different with this, then what's the point?

Full disclosure, I'd actually prefer a 1940's era Superman to this, but that's so much of the same things; Lois and the paper and all the rest. This was more fun creatively than just changing the setting's timeframe.

The Super-Man. (we're adding the hyphen) We'll say the New52 happened. T-shirt, the Collector, Vynx, Horrorville, Doomed, etc. Then Truth hits; Clark loses his powers, the Fortress, the best friend (Lois), the girl (Diana), the apartment, the job, League membership, and most importantly, his identity and sense of self. He defeats Vandal Savage but never gets his powers back.

We pick up with Clark a year later. He's living and working on the Kent farm in Smallville (bought back for a dollar from whoever Clark sold it to). Building on Horrorville and Clark's identity being public, Smallville has become a focal point for weird crap. Vaguely "freak of the week meets Stranger Things." John Henry Irons and Lana Lang-Irons (yeah, they marry) move the Steelworks out to Smallville to lend Clark a hand and study the weird stuff that happens. Kara leaves for the 31st century never to be seen again, and gives Clark her indestructible cape as a parting gift. After the loss of everything else, this is among Clark's most cherished possessions. The residents of Smallville serve as supporting cast members as well, especially that trinity of old folks sitting on the porch during Horrorville (I forget names).

Clark stays out of Metropolis and has warrants for his arrest there, and is no longer speaking to anyone at the Planet, except Jimmy. They remain friends, and on the rare occasion Clark does have to sneak into the city, he stays in Suicide Slum's "Kentville" who support Clark even still. Clark also remains estranged from the League, though largely because he's gone back to his (historic) roots as a social crusader and they're still....the League. There's less animosity between Clark and the League than there is with the Planet staff, but there's a sense of being discarded.

    Superman's stories generally revolve around one of three things;

1 Clark traveling the world adventuring and helping where he can. These stories would be molded after the Golden Age social crusader stuff (corrupt politicians, current events, pulp traveling adventures, etc) and the kind of "folk tale hero" stuff Morrison played with (The lost cape, Krypto's story, etc).

2 The events surrounding Smallville. Very much along the lines of Pak's Horrorville arc; monsters and extra-normal events and things even a Superman can't explain. "Stranger Things" and "X-Files" stuff. Why is this happening and why now?

3 Superman dealing with his old, powerful foes. Clark's lost his powers, but that doesn't mean Mongul and Brainiac and Zod hate him any less. How does a Superman with only Golden Age/t-shirt powers and an indestructible cape handle someone who can break the planet in half? And what do these villains accomplish, how do they change, without Superman there like he used to be?

Clark's personal narrative would revolve around him attempting to adjust to his public identity and no longer having to compartmentalize his life. This is a Clark who had powers from birth, who was different from the very start and grew up living a double life; the one where he saw and did things no one else could, and the one where he was a regular kid. Clark has never known another way to live, and now that duality to his nature is gone. His privacy is gone. He has to sort of learn how to live all over again, and his role in the world has changed considerably. Many people think Superman fell from grace and became a footnote in history, but Clark believes he was finally set free to do what he was born to do: Change the world. He just has to figure out how it all works now.

Oh, and he grows a beard. Because "Bearded Bruce Springsteen Superman" is badass.
"We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another, as if we were one single tribe."

I always felt that the Earth-2 title from the New 52 lent it self well to establishing an "Ultimate" like experience. Had that title not gone to complete hell it could've acted as a launch point for plenty of titles.

    Agreed.

In fact I'd take it one step further and suggest that "Earth 2", as the relative "clean slate" should have been the main focus of New 52 initiative with "New Earth" taking the old "Earth Two" slot as the Earth where the "legacy tales" are told, rather than being the main marquee continuity.

You'd have to fundamentally make big changes to make that work. One of the great selling points of Earth-2 was that there was no Trinity so to make it the "main Earth" with no Trinity would never work as no one would really buy it with out them.

    That's true.

I still think that my basic idea of taking concept of the two (or three if you want to keep Earth 2 as well) universes and having one as the "clean slate" and one as the "legacy" would have been more successful overall than an awkward half-house "partial clean" that sort of accomplishes the objective, but at the same doesn't as they didn't really "clean slate" one of the two main 'marquee' brands (Batman) and most of the other surviving brands were a weird hotch-potch of "clean slate" and "retained", in fact I think that Wonder Woman was the only major sub-brand that did a fairly good job of "clean-slating" and even that was unpopular with a lot of long-terms and IIRC kinda 'meh' in terms of bringing in new fans.

As far as no Trinity, that's sorta true, though they might have been able to make that work with other characters if theyput enough effort into it. After all, the Arrowverse manages without two of the Trinity and only parts of the third (Superman is present, but focuses on Supergirl). One option might have been to do it as a combination of Earth Two, Four and Five to allow for fan favourite characters like Captain Atom, Shazam and Blue Beetle to be used rather than it being a pure-ish Earth-Two reboot.

An Ultimate line is kinda difficult now and most of them end being more like possible elseworlds. In Marvel, the objetive of the Ultimate line were pretty clear:

1.-Update and sell the characters for a modern audience without the continuity baggage.
2.-Sell the chracters to Holywood inversionists and convince them they could be sucessful movies.

As you guess, they were successful and even if the Ultimate linereach their goals, Marvel choose to keep it, even if they became a rotten husk of its former self.

But if you think, even the Ultimate line was very much conservative if you compare them with the relaunch of the characters in the 50s, because, in the Ultimate line, Peter Parker still was Spider-Man, CaptainAmerica Still was Steve Rogers and TonyStark still was Iron Man. But in the silver age relaunch at DC, all the background of the characters was reimaginied and only the hero identities and powers were kept. The rest, was all-new. You can argue the context, but still it is an intersting fact. As was pointed, the New52 Earth-2 title is the most Ultimate title done in DC, even more than the rest of the line.
