Default I've neglected DC, where do I start?

    Hello all,

Had an account on here a long time ago. Can't remember for the life of me what I was called so I'm back with a fresh face. I've not picked up many comicbooks in the last few years, except Alan Moores - From Hell. That I thoroughly enjoyed and now I've got an itch to dip my toe back in the pond. However, on looking through my shelves, I've come to the conclusion that DC have taken a serious shunning in terms of my reading experience minus batman.

Therefore, I'm asking you to recommend me some of your favourite titles (preferably collected graphic novels, easier for me to buy). I'm specifically interested in: The Flash, Green Lantern and Aquaman.

I look forward to your recommendations.

    Cheers,
    Steven

For Aquaman, Geoff Jones and Dan Abnett runs are definitively a must have, especially the former, who redefined Aquaman's mythos and served as the foundation for the movie.

For Green Lantern, I would recommand the Green Lanterns Rebirth series, with Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz as Lanterns, who had real chemistry and were really touching characters, at least to me.

    Don't feel bad, Steven.

DC has neglected us, as well.
ConnEr Kent flies. ConnOr Hawke has a bow. Batman's kid is named DamiAn.

To do spoiler tags, use [ spoil ] at the start of the sentence and [ /spoil ] at the end, without the spaces. You're welcome!

Geoff Johns, Parker and Abnett runs are a must for Aquaman, forget the current run.

James Robinson- Starman. Easily one of the best superhero stories of all time.

    Geoff Johns- JSA

Mark Waid- The Flash- Wally West as the Flash and features one of the best supporting cast of any runs in comics.
    AKA FlashFreak
    Favorite Characters:
DC: The Flash (Jay & Wally), Starman- Jack Knight, Stargirl, & Shazam!.
MARVEL: Daredevil, Spider-Man (Peter Parker), & Doctor Strange.

    Current Pulls: Not a thing!

Seconding Cooke's DC: The New Frontier. It's not a run per se, rather a thorough reimagining and reexamination of DC's Silver Age, but it's a really good and strong story as well.

It's outside of your direct interest, but I was impressed by Wolfman's Man and Superman.
«Speaking generally, it is because of the desire of the tragic poets for the marvellous that so varied and inconsistent an account of Medea has been given out» (Diodorus Siculus, The Library of History [4.56.1])

Sadly there aren't many "Graphic Novels" including the heros you especially like.
But I have bolded the somewhat stand alone stories that you could like in my below lists.

But here is what I say to people who wants to get into DC Comics:

    DC has 4-5 eras :

    Gold / Silver / Bronze age - 1938-1986
    Modern Age - 1986-2011
    New52 - 2011-2016
    Rebirth - 2016-ongoing

DC is made of Several major heroes:

    Superman
    Batman
    Wonder Woman
Flash (there has been multiple ones)
    Aquaman
    Green Arrow
Green Lantern (there has been mutiple ones)

DC has also other great heroes

    Shazam! (aka Capitain Marvel)
    Martian Manhunter
    Plastic Man
    Atom
    Black Canary
    Booster Gold
    Cyborg
    Nightwing (formerly the first Robin)
    Batwoman
    Power Girl
    ...

DC has lesser known heroes that are a bit aside

    Animal Man
    Swamp Thing
    John Constantine
    Detective Chimp
    The Watchmen
    The Metal Men
    ...

DC heroes have younguer apprentice, and other young heroes

Robin (there has been a few)
    Superboy
    Aqualad
    Supergirl
    Beast Boy (aka Chagelling)
    Speedy
    Starfire
    Kid Flash
    Raven
    Wonder Girl
    Batgirl
    ...

DC has teams with these heroes:

    The Justice League
The Justice of America (aka JLA)
    The Teen Titans
    The Titans
    The Justice League Dark
The Suicide Squad (team of vilains forced to do good by the government)

This is unbelievably extensive! Thank you very much! Thankyou for explaining the eras of the DC Universe. I think for a lot of characters I'm interested in I'll jump in at rebirth so I'm with the more modern times and then pick up some titles from the different ages as they are recommended.

If you like Green Lantern and you're jumping in at Rebirth, you can't go wrong with Robert Venditti's run on Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps.

I can also highly recommend Tomasi and Gleason's Superman (#1-45), and Joshua Williamson's Flash (#1-present).

And not specifically in the Rebirth continuity as far as I know, but Tom King and Mitch Gerads did something special with their 12-issue Mister Miracle series.

If you like movies/theatrical storytelling then in addition to the amazing submissions above I would like to suggest WONDER WOMAN BY PHIL JIMENEZ. His work is so cinematic it is like the characters, action, and drama leap off of the page. His work was only recently collected in total so you are doing this st a very good time.

Might I suggest the sticky DC Recommendations thread at the top of the forum? Loads of answers there (including by me).

Aquaman is the easiest. Start with the first volume of New 52 Aquaman by Geoff Johns and once all the New 52 volumes are done, continue on to Rebirth.

Joshua Williamson's Flash is great, and there are 10 collected volumes out so far so plenty to sink your teeth into. It's been a really fun ride, mixing old and new ideas, and is easily the best Flash since Johns' run with Wally. If you've been away for a while, it's a good place to start.

    Vol 1: Lightning Strikes Twice
    Vol 2: Speed of Darkness
    Vol 3: Rogues Reloaded
    Batman/Flash: The Button
    Vol 4: Running Scared
    Vol 5: Negative
Vol 6: Cold Day in Hell
    Vol 7: Perfect Storm
    Vol 8: Flash War

"I WILL MIX THE ASHES OF YOUR BONES WITH SALT AND USE THEM TO ENSURE THE EARTH THE TEMPLARS TILLED NEVER BEARS FRUIT AGAIN!"
