The director penned a passionate op-ed in The Washington Post where he called movie theaters a "vital part of American social life" and urged the government to help in their recovery.

"When this crisis passes, the need for collective human engagement, the need to live and love and laugh and cry together, will be more powerful than ever." Nolan wrote in the op-ed. "The combination of that pent-up demand and the promise of new movies could boost local economies and contribute billions to our national economy."

Nolan also put forth the case that studios should form partnerships with theaters, as well as the fact that theater employees need government support. "The combination of that pent-up demand and the promise of new movies could boost local economies and contribute billions to our national economy," he wrote.

As Nolan pointed out, the movie industry has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. Thousands of theaters have closed across the globe and dozens of films have been delayed, costing 150,00 people their jobs.
