The Woman In Black. I don't think I ever saw a film that made me jump and squirm in my seat so much. It took me two tries to finish it.
Neither vivid, nor gruesome, but creepy! Watkins knew how to frame mood.

Definitely, my choice would be...
Perfect Blue
The Changeling from 1980 with George C. Scott.
Train to Busan was my favorite Horror Movie
30 Days of Night and Pumpkinhead rank #2 and #3
Last House on the Left ( 1972) really creeped me out. I'm glad I saw it, but even years later, I'm in no hurry to rewatch it.
I have this on DVD. You should really try to finish it. You're missing out.
That movie was traumatizing because more than a horror movie it possible for something like this to happen to a person, like something you would have seen on Unsolved Mysteries
For me...The Strangers. This film was slow build up but, very atmospheric. It really shook me up the first time I saw it. I own it on dvd and its my favorite horror film to revisit.

For me it is Night of the Living Dead, Both original and the 90s remake. The 90s remake was the first horror movie I had ever seen and it scared the living crap out of me. And I loved every second of it.

Keep your hands to yourself, leave other people's things alone, and be kind to one another.
Burnt Offerings (1976) scared the living SH!T out of me when i was a kid.
DONT BE AFRAID OF THE DARK
The 1973 made for TV movie, not the 2010 theatrical remake.
I think most of us have heard of this but it's still funny.
