Default LTTP: Mike Carey's X-Men Legacy

Ok so thanks to a previous Hickman I decided to jump back into Mike's X-men series. I read the Supernova issues years ago and really enjoyed them so this time I decided to go back and read them from the beginning and HOLY HELL are they good. I'm only a few issues in the quality is amazing and atmospheric. The whole introspective dive into Xavier as character examining his motivations and drives is just so well put together.

I had forgotten some of the great storytelling that came from the whole House of M/Messiah Complex events. What the hell happened to the X-men books? I feel like after AvX Marvel just largely stopped putting effort into the X-Men. Even a few issues in there's some pretty interesting concepts especially with Mr. Sinister, I mean experimenting on Xavier when he was a child, grooming Scott at the Orphanage, taking a sample of Jean's DNA when she was just a little girl? Can't wait to read the rest.

Xavier Legacy should get a complete collection in preparation for Hickman.

Rogue Legacy was the best Legacy of all time.

I preferred Mike Carey's adjectiveless X-Men issues over his Legacy issues.

His entire run is amazing, from Adjectiveless to Rogue's Legacy, passing through Supernovas, Xavier's Legacy, Necrosha and Age of X. Great plots, engaging stories and almost flawless characterizations. A nice mix of new concepts and old threads. A deep respect for continuity. Honestly, probably my favorite X-Men run along with CC's classic years and Morrison's.

Will definitely check that out he's very quickly becoming my favorite X-Men writer. Chronologically should it be read before or after Legacy?

Before. It ends with Messiah Complex which flows into his Legacy run.

His run starts with X-Men #188 and turns into X-Men Legacy with #207. It ends at #260. He also wrote a Secret Invasion mini and some anthology shorts I think.

Rogue's team was one of the best X-men runs ever for me!!!!!

(And then Cyclops demoted Rogue, when he's the reason the team failed to begin with lmao)

I am currently in the middle of reading this as part of my preparation for the upcoming Hickman run, so perhaps I shouldn't say too much...but the Supernovas arc was amazing and the post-Messiah Complex issues centered around Xavier are doing a good job in terms of examining his characterization and morally questionable history with a critical yet not entirely unsympathetic eye.

This is what I was trying to say but much more eloquently put lol I'm having a lot of fun with these Xavier issues. I'm curious to see which concepts/ideas (if any) Hickman touches on.

I don't know what connections Hickman could even make with this, but during Age of X, Legion's defiant personality that took the form of Moira called herself 'X'. Not saying that the Moira we've seen in preview art will be a fake, but it's interesting that it's also the name that Charles has taken since he's returned. I doubt it was intentional on Soule's part but a link can certainly be made.

Great catch about Moira during AoX! God I miss clay Mann art too!

I love Carey’s X-men, especially 188-204! Glad it’s finally getting some love that it deserves! I was so pumped for this and brubakers uncanny when it was announced but I thought MC blew Brubaker away! His care for continuity and knowledge for x characters was thoughtfully embedded in his stories
