Default Adam Warlock Appreciation 2019: the original nemesis of Thanos.

After getting his far into the Infinity War, it seems bizarre to me there is so still little interest in Adam Warlock.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Adam Warlock is that he develops by battling himself, as his 'alter ego,' the Magus.

Conceived as a fully-grown perfect man, Adam Warlock is rather unique in the Marvel Universe, in that his story does not start with him resolving the problems he had at the time of acquiring superpowers. As such, Jim Starlin was able to consider deeper issues, such as fate, from the outset.

Jim Starlin also invented Thanos to be the ultimate nemesis of Adam Warlock.

    THE FIRSST INFINITY GAUNTLET STORY

    from Wikipedia:

Scientists on Earth calling themselves the Enclave created an artificial, perfect human, who initially calls himself "Him".[26] After rebelling against his creators,[27] and having a conflict with Thor, Him decides to leave Earth and travels into space.[28]

He encounters the High Evolutionary, who gives him the name "Warlock". The High Evolutionary requests Warlock's help in saving the artificially created planet Counter-Earth from the evil Man Beast[29] and gives Warlock the green Soul Gem (also referred to as the "Soul Jewel"), which allows Warlock to capture souls of other beings. When he arrives on Counter-Earth,[30] Warlock is given the name Adam by four teenagers who befriend him. After the Man Beast's defeat, Warlock leaves Counter-Earth to find a new purpose.[31]

In his travels through space, Warlock encounters the Universal Church of Truth, an intergalactic religious organization led by the corrupt Magus.[32] Warlock allies with Pip the Troll,[33] the assassin Gamora,[34] and Gamora's employer and adoptive father, Thanos of Titan, to oppose the Magus. Eventually, Warlock discovers that the Magus is a future version of himself who traveled back in time after being driven insane by the use of his Soul Gem.[35] Warlock chooses to alter his timeline by visiting himself a few months into the future and steals his own soul to prevent the Magus from ever existing.[36] Warlock then continues his journeys, knowing he has seen his own death but not knowing exactly when it will happen.

When the Stranger attempts to steal Warlock's Soul Gem, Warlock learns about five other related gems.[37] Thanos gains possession of these gems with the intention of destroying Earth's sun. When Thanos causes mortal harm to Pip and Gamora, Warlock takes their souls to end their suffering. Warlock then enlists the aid of the Avengers, Captain Marvel, and Moondragon to stop Thanos. During the battle, Warlock's younger self appears and takes the older Warlock's soul. Inside the gem, Adam is reunited with Pip, Gamora and others in a utopia known as Soul World.[38] Warlock's soul is temporarily freed from the Soul Gem, allowing him to turn Thanos to stone and save Earth.[39]

I really liked the DnA GOTG Warlock. He was like a cosmic err Warlock. Now he seems to have gone back to the generic superman type powers.

I really hope Cates run on Silver Surfer opens the doors to Marvel’s Cosmic universe. I’d love to see a new ongoing or even a yearly mini featuring Adam by Duggan or Cates, along with a Nova book, an ongoing Silver Surfer, maybe a Darkhawk mini thrown in.

I think Warlocks cosmic powers were always vague to the point where it was essentially magic. His abilities seemed to streamline when he had the soul gem. But outside of that, I think he always seemed somewhat magical in terms of what he could do simply because his abilities weren't well defined. I still don't think we know exactly what his powers are.

    Thor #165 Jun 1969
    ""Him!"
Following their battle with Pluto and the Mutates from a possible apocalyptic future,
Thor, Sif and Balder celebrate with the soldiers who helped them defeat the menace.
After the celebrations have ended, Thor decides to investigate what it was Pluto sought to claim from within the Atomic Research Center.

While in distant Asgard, Karnilla has called upon Haag a sorceress to try and make Balder fall in love with her, a task that Haag gleefully takes.

Back on Earth, Thor and the others search the halls of of the center when they are bombarded by a burst of energy.
Down the hall in a secret room, a cocoon containing the artificial man named Him breaks free.

Confronting the three Asgardians, Him explains his origins and how he was created by the Enclave.
He continues to explain that he destroyed his evil creators and flew off into the stars,
when he was drawn into a strange space trap and was struck by a meteor, and having to enter his cocoon state once more.
Unknown to Him at the time, he was spotted by the Watcher who felt compelled to violate his solemn oath of non-involvement
and would place the cocoon in a US Space laboratory satellite that was destined to return to Earth.

Finishing his story, Him explains that now that he has risen he feels lonely and seeks out a mate and picks Sif to fill that role.

Thor and Balder naturally try to stop Him from taking Sif away, however they are easily batted away. Him grabs Sif and then teleports away.
Furious, Thor uses his hammer to transport himself and Balder to wherever it is that Him has taken his beloved.

While back in Asgard, Odin continues his research in the origins of Galactus,
and has one of his scientists seek out the world where Galactus was spawned.
While in another place, Thor and Balder have tracked down Him and Sif.

When Thor attempts to attack Him directly, he is struck down with an energy blast.
Balder then attempts to save Sif, however his attempt is interrupted when Haag
suddenly appears and using a giant hand attempts to pull Balder back to Asgard.

Reviving, Thor is forced to come to Balder's aid and banishes Haag back to Asgard
and closes the portal that the mystic opened with the power of his hammer.
With this new threat vanquished, Thor turns and finds that in the confusion Him had escaped with Sif.
Undaunted, Thor vows to not only get his beloved back, but get vengance against Him.

    Incredible Hulk #176 Jun 1974
    "Crisis on Counter-Earth!"
    ...continued from Warlock #8
The Hulk has been launched into space by the Inhumans following his rampage through their home.
Confused and angry at being in captivity, and unaware that he is in reality aboard a spaceship, the Hulk furiously tries to smash himself free.
The destruction he causes makes the ship pilot directly into the sun.

While on Earth, Betty Talbot has dinner with her father where she opens up to him and expresses her feelings
over the seeming death of her husband Glenn, and her first love Bruce Banner. However, like Banner, Glenn is not dead,
and has just escaped a Russian military prison in Siberia where he has been captive for many months.
Upon his escape, the Russian commanders in control of the base are more than happy that Talbot has escaped.

Meanwhile, back in space, the ship carrying the Hulk steers away from the sun and heads toward its originally intended destination: Counter-Earth.
There it crashes into the ocean, drawing the attention of the US military who send a team out to recover it.
Opening up the space capsule, they find Bruce Banner unconscious inside.
When Banner comes around in a military hospital, he is accused of being a spy since Counter-Earth has it's own version of Bruce Banner
and the soldier demands to know if he has any ties to Adam Warlock.

This hard questioning and the realization that he is back on Counter-Earth causes Bruce to transform into the Hulk once again and smash out.

Reports reach Washington D.C., where protesters are outside of the White House
demanding that their government free Adam Warlock from captivity.
There the Man-Beast, who has been posing as the President of the United States his minions
Barachuudar, Snakar, Weezhil and Cobrah to capture the Hulk and bring him back to the Man-Beast.
As they fly off in a ship to capture the green brute, the Man-Beast contacts his minion Lizhardus.
Lizhardus informs him that all attempts to bend Adam Warlock's will to their side have ended in failure.

The Hulk has arrived in Washington D.C. and seeking solitude smashes his way into the Washington Monument
where he tries to get some peace and quiet but has to smash through some soldiers in order to get to it.
His solitude is broken when the Man-Beast's minions attack, blasting the top of the Monument revealing the Hulk.
As the four New Men battle the Hulk, the brute has them on the defensive until they manage to slip a mask
on his face, enveloping him in enough gas to make him pass out and revert back into Bruce Banner.

While elsewhere, Lizhardus is deep in thought about how to make Adam Warlock his master's slave, when he is attacked and knocked out from behind

by the Recorder, who has come to free Warlock so that he can save Counter-Earth from the Man-Beast.

Script by Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway, pencils by Herb Trimpe, inks by Jack Abel

    Thor #166 Jul 1969
Second Adam Warlock appearance ("Him") in "A God Berserk!"
Thor is furious that Him has made off with his beloved Sif, and in the throws of rage lashes out on
the world that they are on, crying forvengeance and causing massive amounts of collateral damage
before teleporting himself and Balder away to find where Him had taken Sif.
As they travel, Karnilla scolds Haag for her previous failure in bringing Balder to her.
However Haag is not without other resources and begins creating a special doll of Balder that will hopefully help achieve Karnilla's goal.

While on another world, Thor and Balder materialize and find that the plants on this world are animated and impede the heroes travels.
They manage to track Him down and find that he has sealed Sif in a sphere high above them.

Furious, Thor battles Him and gets more and more angry as the fight goes on.

Witnessing the battle from Asgard, when coming across the battle Odin recognizes that Thor is going through the Warriors Madness.
Odin finds this grave as those who fall to it must pay a penalty, even the son of all-powerful Odin.
Back at the battle, Thor is denied his vengeance when Him suddenly enters into a cocoon form and flies off into space to return to the stars.

With his foe out of sight, Thor finds that the Warriors Madness begins to fade from his mind, and realizes to his horror what he had gone through.

With Him defeated however, he frees Sif from the sphere she is trapped in and the two are reunited.
With the battle over, Balder, Thor and Sif realize that there is a hefty price to pay for his succumbing to the Warrior Madness.

While back in Asgard, a space ship that has been prepared to send an Asgardian into space to seek out Galactus is completed
and Odin decides that Thor's punishment will be to seek out the world devourer and learn it's origins.
Thor and the others return to Asgard, where Thor tells the other to leave him to face Odin and his punishment alone.
