There is no such thing as flooding the market when your retailer CHOOSE to order the books.
I can offer as many book as I want but it is still the JOB of the retailer to order what they believe they can sell.

Example Zombie Tramp average 6 variant cover a month. Yet when I go to various stores-either that book is NOT there or only 2 of those variants are there.
Same with Savage Dragon-most stores I know only order 2 copies.

Retailers need to learn what self control is. Marvel & Dc will only do what YOU choose to allow. If who on the cover determines wht you order versus actual sales-that is YOUR issue.

I have seen owner throw fits about 2-3 unsold copies of Squirrel Girl yet got 25 unsold copies of Hal Jordan. Both end up in the 25 cent bin but all the crying is about Squirrel Girl.

That should be a reality check that not everyone cares for Hal.

Hulk beating Batman is probably due to more folks READING that book and asking for it versus Batman just getting ordered based on he is Batman. The decrease is probably actual pull readers.

I can sort of see a certain logic in Marvel's approach. Big companies love branding and creating a market presence. There's a reason why Coke and Pepsi spend millions on Superbowl ads and it's not to get people to drink more soda. They want to establish themselves as THE soda brand. Not only because of the retailers stocking their shelves, but also because it gives off the impression of a strong vibrant company which is super important to bankers and stock brokers when it comes time to value this publicly traded company. So maybe Marvel is flooding the market to prop themselves up as THE comic company and trying to drown out everyone else.

It's also possible, though unlikely, that Marvel is trying to capture more of the potential audience with more titles. Theoretically, you could hit more demographics by releasing more comics which are specifically targeted to certain groups. Most fans won't buy every single release, but maybe one group buys some and another group buys others. This is tougher to do with fewer titles because you end up needing those titles to appeal to more people which can run the risk of just alienating the entire audience. This Marvel method may work on paper, but execution is another story. Just an opinion, but lately it feels like most titles are targeting the same narrow audience.

Again, Al Ewing is writing an absolute masterpiece on the Hulk title right now!

In April, more comic book retailers in North America ordered copies of the ongoing series of The Immortal Hulk, than they did of Batman. This is the first time that an ongoing series has beaten Batman two months in a row that I can recall. Previously it’s only been high profile event mini-series, from Doomsday Clock to The Batman Who Laughs to Metal, or anniversary issues such as Amazing Spider-Man #800. But this isn’t the case for Immortal Hulk by Al Ewing, Joe Bennett and Paul Mounts who have built sales upon sales upon sales over one-and-a-half yearsand giving Marvel Comics a success story they could never have anticipated.

Last month’s issues orders were dismissed by some as reflecting a very fine tiered cover, one copy available to retailers for every 25 copies they ordered, bumping the numbers. But twice in a month is less easy to dismiss.

Amazing Spider-Man also gets an issue over Batman, courtesy of its Hunted event storyline and added discount from Marvel to retailers , but the subsequent issue was ordered with fewer copies. And, yes, Batman, like Amazing Spider-Man, is twice-monthly – but that won’t be true for 2020…

Here are those top tens again.

    Sort by "Est. Sales" column.

Using that, Star Wars #1 (2015) with 985,976 is first but it has an asterisk due to being given away in a Loot Crate (via Diamond) but even if the estimated high number of issues on Loot Crate are removed it probably still beats Amazing Spider-Man #1 (2014)which is next with 532,586.

edit: bad math, thought Star Wars would be bumped down.

    OK, but it isn't working.

Pepsi and Coke have tons of money to spend on advertising, and that's good for the networks who run their commercials. That's income to them.

However, a comic store has to do the paying, not Marvel or DC. So, if Marvel cranks out a lot of low-selling titles just to take up shelf space, the retailer is out that money if it doesn't sell.

Yes, the retailer has a choice of what to stock, but I've never seen a retailer outright refuse to order any copies of a Marvel or DC title. Marvel's been flooding the marketplace since the 1950s as best as it could. Only during that late 50s to late 60s period when Marvel was distributed by DC did they NOT try to do this because DC's distribution arm wouldn't let them. By the early 1970s, Marvel was going apeshit crazy flooding the newsstands. It's Marvel's stock-in-trade.

However, now we're seeing that it doesn't lead to better results as DC's average unit sales are higher than Marvel's.

As for the effect of the Year of the Villain special, I don't think it will be included on any charts because it was a 25-cent comic. I think comics priced under one dollar are considered promotional items and Diamond doesn't count them in the Market Share and Sales figures.

I don't understand the appeal of variants today. Back then sure, they're rare because they're only printed that one time and we don't even get Trade collection that often. These days the variants are always collected in Trade version, and these days all you have to do is Save As the file anytime a preview shows up.

This is coming from someone who has never picked up a Hulk comic before. It’s absolutely phenomenal and at the top of my stack every time it’s released.

I'm not saying it was working, I'm just trying to play devil's advocate. At the end of the day it's all about making money, not making good comics. Most of the time making good comics leads to making money, but when you get creatively bankrupt you have to look for other ways to turn a buck right now, even if it may or may not harm you in the future. I don't know what the break even level is on a comic... 15,000 sales per month, 30,000... whatever it is, if it costs Marvel $10,000 to publish a single issue of a comic and it sells just enough to cover it's cost plus 10% then they made money even if it sells in the 20K range. And if they can make money on one 20K book, then why not push out more 20K quality books. I don't know what the real numbers are or if they are even making money on those low selling titles. Again, just trying to understand.

If Marvel cuts out their low sellers, then their per unit will increase. I'm not that impressed by DC's per unit win. If Image cancelled every comic except for Walking Dead, their per unit sales would be through the roof. It really comes down to DC is trying to make a lot on a little as opposed to Marvel making a little on a lot.
