It's a teaser for something set in Kamandi's future. These are all teasers for DC's most famous futures (LoSh, Beyond, OMAC etc).

As long as it happens in "a future" rather than "THE present," I guess I can live with it. I hope he doesn't actually show it happening though. Superman has died like three times in various media in the last five years, you could set your watch by it. "Time to get a new watch," DC.

If it occurs in the ill-defined "future" fine but if it plays out in the present I say oh hell no!!! Sups has "died" or been presumed dead more than enough times already. No thank you.

It's from Kamandi.
Superman is "missing" during Kamandi's time. Something happened to him during the Great Disaster. It's unclear if he died or is just MIA.
His cape is a sacred artifact, like a Shroud of Turin. There's many legends about the man who wore it and his time as "Earth's Champion".
