Their uniforms were largely based on Superman's -- trunks, belt, boots and an icon the chest. Cockrum used mostly a mod (late 60s/early 70s fashion trend) to update the Legion. Mini skirts and hot pants were very in fashion for young women then -- and the Legion ladies reflected that. Interestingly, one of his favorite characters -- Phantom Girl -- was dressed fairly conservatively -- as was Shrinking Violet. It didn't hurt that Cockrum was also an excellent and imaginative artist (inking most his own work on Legion). Although his stay was short, his contributions lived on a long time after he departed -- and helped make the Legion popular again.

But those outfits were of a particular time and place. I never expected those to return (well, maybe Lightning Lads' -- just because it's a bit timeless), but I do like when modern day artist incorporate elements of Cockrum's designs. Modern designers are in a precarious position -- some fans like outfits that look more like uniforms -- and could be worn in real life. Others want more fantastical looks -- being that superheroes do not exist in real life-- outlandish outfits pop on the comics page. I guess Sook is trying to appeal to both sides. Also, I would assume that Bendis had some input regarding their new looks. Maybe that's why Brainy looks so wimpy and Imra looks neutered.
I was thinking myself how Cochram's designs really gave the Legion a jolt. I remember how disappointed I was when Mike Grell took over. Disappointed by Mark Grell! Can you imagine?

Not only imagine -- I felt the same way. I recall looking at the art in Superboy and the Legion 203 -- and thinking something is way off. Then I checked the credits -- then I saw the page introducing Mike (who had actually inked one of Cockrum's stories in the previous issue -- and did a great job). For some reason, 203 was one of Grell's best as far as Legion goes. His work was a bit too stiff thereafter. I didn't warm up to his work until years later - maybe around Longbow Hunters, but he had improved significantly over the years.

I did like some of Grell's character designs -- especially Dawnstar and the short-lived one for Chlorophyll Kid. The Night Girl bikini was a bit embarrassing -- as was Cosmic Boy's. Those two looked like they were ready to make a porno.

What are some of the funniest insults in Legion history?

Although I love Dream Girl, she was the butt of two of Wildfire's funniest remarks:

Wildfire: "As usual, Dream Girl's power left something to be desired - namely accuracy"
Wildfire (at realizing Dream Girl was serious about running for leader): "next thing you know, Krypto the Super Dog will be running"

What are some of your favorites?

This is certainly better than the threeboot with dots for eyes and retractable antennae. I just hope he's not too alien in his characterization.

Have we already gotten a glimpse at Bendis' Legion in Superman #9?

Maybe they are gonna focus on her being a "genius ice queen" a character trait which was always more implied by the other Legion members about Irma than Irma's character herself.

It will be interesting to see how Tyroc is presented. I am sure Bendis will use him.

I do want to see some new development with the characters -- especially as far as powers. I mean -- it would be cool if Phantom Girl could stuff that a poltergeist could do -- instead of just turning intangible. But I hope the characterization is somewhat familiar. I'm not happy with how wimpy Brainiac 5 looks in that Sook character desgin.

Definitely looks to be the Legion as there are some rather distinct character shadows there like Bouncing Boy, Lightning Lad, Dawnstar, Gates, Cham and who could possibly be Mon-El on the left and Sensor Girl/Projectra at the top. There's also Saturn Girl's new hair making it's debut just below LL.

Yes at least into the 40s. We getting 34 leads but there may be other characters as well. I believe, not sure, that Bendis said somewhere that we may have already seen the Legion.

Chameleon Boy only takes on a human apperance to better fit in with his teamates, and usually stays as close to human as he can to make it easier. His true form is very alien unsettling. This new version just looks weird when compared to his past versions, and when the whole point of him taking a human form is to fit in why would he choose to look so odd.

This is the true form of a Durlan.

One of the characters looks like it could be Andromeda. That would be cool.

Perhaps because in the 32nd Century, peoples have gotten over the appearance of others ?

What's the point of an alien character if he looks 90% like a human anyway ?
