Kate McKinnon is only funny in small doses. The longer she is on screen the more grating her shtick gets.
It will fail. First one only worked because of Jim Carey. And no I don't think that there's a male physical comedian who could pull it off either.
I'm one of five people who did. I thought it was pretty good. Oh nowhere near as good as the first Mask but good in its own right. Basically a man's anxiety and eventual acceptance over being a father. Ah and Odin (Bob Hoskins) accepting his son Loki (Alan Cummin) just the way he is. We got Jamie Kennedy in the Mask for one sequence, I wish the movie had more of that.
The question will be do they have a good script and direction, or is it going to be something mediocre that gets defended by the genderflip rather than any level of quality? Ocean's Eight was supposed to be pretty good, and I have seen good female-led films in the past, so I know it can be done.

If they want to keep true to the comic do we really want a woman for a violent sociopathic character.
The Gypsies had no home. The Doors had no bass.

Whenever the question comes up about who some mysterious person is or who is behind something the answer will always be Frank Stallone.
