The main villain of this has been stated to be a witch and the wuxia fighting seen here is a lot more fantastical than the fairly realistic fighting shown in the animated movie.

So, take out fighting the early Huns in favor of a witch (an army to face a witch?), and wuxia over, well, whatever it was the animated film showed?

Descriptions of the films mention the Huns. So, they may still be involved. And it doesn't matter if the main villain is a witch as long as the witch has an opposing army. I mean, it's not like they sent a whole army to just fight Shen Yu. Maybe this is the folklore buff in me, but who the villain is doesn't matter too much. Almost every retelling changes who the enemy is. A few times it's even been an insurrection from within China. Disney probably used the Huns because they loved the idea of the Great Wall which was supposed to keep out the Huns. Cartoon one is on Netflix. Go watch it. It's a good movie. The direct to video Mulan 2 is trash however. Avoid it at all costs! The first one is great.

It looks EXACTLY like a prestige HK made Wuxia movie, except that Zhang Ziyi isn't in it this time.

Well, I'm feeling hopeful now. The original is one of the big Disney movies for me, so I do want this to turn out well. While the teaser doesn't give a lot of clues, it looks well put together.

So has it been confirmed the songs and Mushu won't be in this? I remember reading about a while back.

It was initially said that was the case (the director admitted that her children weren't happy with the songs being cut), but they subsequently announced that Mushu would be in the movie in some capacity (whether he's as important as in the original or just a cameo of some sort remains to be seen) and at least some of the songs would be used in some fashion.

A lot of the supporting characters have been replaced, so we'll see how that goes.

The teaser isn't doing much for me, but I was already interested before it dropped as Mulan was one of my favorites growing up. I'll wait and see what the next trailer is like.
