do the x-men need a space team a la Starjammers?
If you think so what mutants would fit such a team?

SCOTT SUMMERS AND EMMA FROST DESERVED BETTER.
I just want Scott and Rachel on the same team, they both did great on space and maybe they could get closer.
WOuld there be a limit to how many to the team?

I would go for another all female team:
Storm
Polaris
Rachel
Magik
Rogue
X-23
Sage or Spiral
Personally, if the X-Universe were headed in a different direction, I'd do the following:
Cyclops - Leader/Captain
Phoenix (Rachel) - Resident Psi
Polaris
Proudstar
Cecelia Reyes
Scott & Rachel could use the distance from the X-Men on Earth, as well as Jean (both) and Emma (Scott).
Lorna's powers and her last trip to space make her an asset.
Proudstar - They need a brawler, and his last trip is an asset.
Cecilia would be the team doctor, and she needs an opportunity to shine & grow.
I'd consider Piotr as well. He could use some space from Earth, his sister, and his ex.
I was a big fan of the line up a decade or so ago and always liked the idea of and X-Men team out in space(makes sense to have a super hero team in space to try and keep problems away from Earth) the team I would role with would be something like this,
Bishop
Cannonball
Deathbird
Lifeguard
Slipstream
Smasher
Vulcan
I think this would be a interesting team and all have strong ties to the space side of things in the MU.Also its only really taking Bishop & Cannonball off planet in terms of characters that other writers might want to use,but not really any big lose with both men not having a focused role in a main titles for years now.I like the dynamic between Bishop & Deathbird twenty or so years ago and think it could be fun to go back to that.Deathbird also was hinted at possibly being Lifeguard & Slipstreams mother so you have that family dynamic.Cannonball & Smasher are you couple trying to raise a new born in a crazy new galaxy and lastly Vulcan has the big time redemption arc.
Cyclops and Havok ZAP! PEW PEW! - Lazer cannons
Rogue - One touch/vicinity and she can rudimentary communicate with any aliens
Ariel and Pixie - Escape and/or beam them down to planets
Madison Jeffries or Forge - maintain space craft
Colossus - resident cannonball and cosmonaut
Cannonball - anti-spacecraft
Transonic - Scout
Dazzler and Banshee - Sound and Light to illuminate the darkest reaches of space
Magma and Polaris - can mine asteroids and bring cold dead planets to life
Oh yeah and Rockslide - cos he's the biggest n best dude to ever grace these books - resident sentient asteroid, ftw

Polaris (co-leader)
Rachel Grey (co-leader)
Kitty Pryde (as Star-Lord, **** off Quill)
Nightcrawler
Triage
Anole
Rockslide
Venus-Dee-Milo
Armor
They need to get involved in space opera-type stuff. Will it sell? Maybe not. Also, Ink is there for the first arc but dies to show how serious everything is. He doesn’t come back.

Didn't they have one already?
Nope. Not a dedicated team.

I'd go madcap GotG premise, and make it VERY tangential to Xavier Institute melodrama. I'd make it based on Lila Cheney's intergalactic music career: she owes money to the space mob, but only knows how to make money in the entertainment business. She suckers Dazzler into "fronting a new band" and gets a few other X-Men to round out the band. Lila says she'll teach them their instruments, but it's really because she knows the X-Men are an elite fighting force and will save her if the mob finds her before the money's won.
So...
Lila, guitar
Ali, vocals
James, bass
Sam, drums
Guido, security
Trinary, effects
Doop, promotions
