Except Bond is one of the unique properties where one person calls the shots and BB will not veer to far off from the golden goose. This is a test run but more likely to see if they can expand the 007 franchise to other characters while retaining a traditional version of Bond to not alienate the fan base.

So, what do you think of this development, if true?

Should the "007" name be passed along like a mantle as they do in comics? Or should "007" be retired once James Bond is no longer using it?

Has anyone read the original books? What was Ian Fleming's intention with "007"?

I did not see Captain Marvel, and I don't think I've ever seen anything Lashana Lynch has been in. Is she a good enough actress to spearhead a major movie franchise like this, or would her taking on the role of 007 make you lose interest in future movies of the franchise?
It sounds good. She is not replacing James Bond. she is one of the many 007s. I admit this looks like an original idea story.

The casting seems to make sense for the narrative. Bond is retired (which was where the last film was going) so why not have a new 007? This is a plot point that could suck or could work out fine, so it's difficult to judge it before the film comes out. The actress seems capable, a British woman who played an African-American fighter pilot in Captain Marvel.

There is one potential concern with this decision, and that would be the extent to which the narrative may be limited due to a concern about left-wing blowback as people get invested in what the character means before we even see a clip of the movie. People on twitter are already worried about how she might be killed off. There will be a lot of think-pieces if she's a villain. If she's less competent than Bond, that will also be a problem. There's a delicate line to thread here that wouldn't apply with Tom Hiddleston in the role. Some movies have pulled that off (Mad Max: Fury Road) but it's likely a writing headache.
    Sincerely,

Broccoli won’t do that. At best you might get a spin-off like they wanted with Halle Berry

This is nothing more than a hard left from dealing with the impact of putting an alpha black male that might potentially be plowing white European women. There is still a fear of a world where black men have agency in higher circles of society. There were too many campaigns for Idris Elba to be 007, for the studio to pull this out there butts is pure comedy that secures white supremacists internalized egos. They are going to pretend to make her the big deal agent just for the (real 007) to come in and save the day and bag a bedwench for good measure. This is reminds me of what they did to Finn in Star Wars build him up prior just to switch out and put Rey as the true focus of the flick and trilogy.

Yeah you’re reaching. Elba was always a stretch to be Bond because campaigns for him came in the middle of Craig’s run (who is one of the most lucrative Bond’s ever) and the films took forever to come out due to strikes and studio shifts. They weren’t going to push Craig out to get Elba and at this point he’s pushing 50. Plenty of other black actors can play Bond.

This film clearly starts with Bond retired so thematically it makes sense to have someone take his number. It was nice that they used to give someone representation, but it’s still a Bond film. I doubt this is more than the female spy bond occasionally
Partners with (Agent Goodnught, Triple X, Jinx).

I don’t really know what you are looking for

Bring in Elba as 006! One better than 007!

Honestly, the fact that the left-wing care about casting in a Bond film is pretty ridiculous if you really think about.

If there is one franchise which is as conservative as you can imagine, its James Bond. This is a series about an agent of Her Majesties Government, completely loyal to Queen and Country, who travels across the globe killing Britain's enemies and bedding women - while presenting himself as the quintessential upper-class English gentleman.

I don't really see what the left hopes to accomplish by demanding changes to the Bond franchise. I mean, wouldn't the simple fact that he's a government agent who acts with impunity be against their left-wing ideals. The franchise is never going to be 'woke' the way they wanted to - the very essence of the franchise is as far from being 'woke' as possible.

This is silly. No one is forcing anything. The campaigns for Idris to be considered for the next bond are just fan campaigns. They happen all the time for popular characters. Is Idris not English? Is MI 6 all white? Is it completely out of the question for there to be a an English black secret agent at the agency? The fact that people are increasingly wanting to see themselves and the diverse world we live in being portrayed in entertainment they consume is only political to people that do not want that diversity.

Bond never struck me as overly conservative or patriotic, especially not as plaid by Craig who was down right cynical and expressed disdain for nationalism. He's just a guy doing a job, a dangerous job, but just a job none the less and he always came across as doing it for the same reason we all go to work...it pays the bills.

In addition to Moneypenny, the Brosnan films also had Colin Salmon's Robinson, who was basically Tanner's replacement, although Tanner shows up WITH Robinson in The World Is not Enough.

I remember when Pierce was let go, Colin was one of the names being considered. Sure, it would be a bit weird as he was playing another character, but this happens in franchises sometimes, and Bond is no exception. One of the Blofelds had a role in You Only Live Twice as Henderson, and Maud Adams played two seperate Bond girls. Two of the Doctor Who Doctors and a few of the companions have had roles on the show beforehand.

I wouldn't say conservative in the traditional sense Americans think of him. But Bond as a character is definitley more on the conservative side. He is a member of the majority and comes from old money. While he doesn't neccessarily believe in the ever lasting validity of each of his countries positions, he has decided his role was to suit their needs in any way possible. He has no qualms about committing murder or breaking international law in the service of his country. He definitley has archaic views about women. Even in Craig's run, outside of Vesper, they went out of his way to show him as a misogynist. He crosses the line sexually multiple times sneaking into a former sex slaves shower compelling her to have sex and seducing a grieving widow after her husband's funeral while her life is in danger partially by pinning her to a all. And that's probably the most progressive version of him.

In the books he spends most analyzing the ways of cultures he deems primitive, has a low opinion of blacks, blames homosexuality on men being confused by dominant women after they were given the right to vote, think's lesbians are just women who have never been banged by a real man (like him), he idolizes monsters like Kerim Bay (who in the books violenty chained and beat women) and Marc Ainge Draco who is another hyper toxicly masculine character. And later in the series spends his time bitching about Britains declinling leading role in world affairs.

We already had a test run it was called James Bond Junior the cartoon show. So it's not like they haven't expanded to others before.

I was a kid when that was on and watched it most people don't know that show existed. That wasn't a test run to expand the franchise it was a small cash grab on something they knew would be forgotten as fast as it came.

It was also made during the License to Kill/Goldeneye gap so maybe just something to keep the franchise fresh in people's minds as well.

It was kind of an odd show. Of course it toned down things from the movies and of course made heavy use of gadgets, and also 'updated' classic foes, including the dead ones. Also James Bond Jr was his nephew, although Bond doesn't seem to have any siblings (Apart from Oberhauser, but he was much later). Funny thing though, the book Bond does have a son (even if you don't consider the post-Fleming books canon, Kissy is pregnant in You Only Live Twice).
