Ah, let me slap you with the Rep real quick.

    Mob Rep

    Police Rep
    Notoriety: 15

Also, I seem to recall requesting that you included the exact circumstances, or at least alluding to them, as to why your character is involved with the operation. Please update your bio with a small bit to cover that.

General note, tonight and onwards, I'll be sending out PMs for workshop stuff. To keep my inbox manageable, I'll be doing you in pairs, most likely following the order of the cast list.

The way that this will go will be me informally asking questions about character background that aren't obvious from the bio and possibly creating a couple of NPC characters that your character already knows. This will help inform strategies you will have open to you during the game itself.

I'll take a crack at trying to finish up the bio. It might take a while, but I'll try to have something ready for review by tonight.

Edited chief...I figured the hook for her would be the police offering her information on the unsolved disappearance of her family in return for playing the part of the mole.

So I'm curious about languages and how they work with the skill tiers. Characters learn them like any other skill, correct? I understand that there are differing levels of fluency, but it seems like a lot of effort to go through to rank difficulty on the same sliding scale each time anyone speaks in a language besides English.

You didn't really ask a question in there.

But yeah it works on the same principle. Ultimately it helps me gauge what level of a language PCs can understand and what information they can effectively learn.

It's some work but, eh, I want the game to be good.

It does mean that being perfectly fluent ain't cheap. And even semi-complex communication will require people to put in a bunch o' points.

    .....

If I want to boost my non-perfect languages up, I'll have to spend as well. As well as, in-game, spend a lot of time on Duolingo and Lingodeer. ^_^
    Why are we here?

"Superboy Prime (the yelling guy if he needs clarification)..." - Postmania
"...dropping an orca whale made of fire on your enemies is a pretty strong opening move." - Nik
"Why throw punches when you can be making everyone around you sterile mutant corpses?" - Pendaran, regarding Dr. Fate

My character will only communicate in a series of ones and zeroes!

(all dialogue *is* input and displayed on a computer, soooo technically true!)

    Name: Talissa Romanov

    Age: 28

Background: Yelena Volkov was born into the powerful Volkov crime family in Gridport, the youngest of four siblings and the only daughter. Alexei was the eldest, followed by Saveli and Mikhail.
Her father, Sergei, was a genteel man, at once affectionate with his family and strict with his subordinates. Her mother, Dusanya, came from the Patrovsky family, known for their involvement in banking. While Sergei ran external affairs, Dusanya both managed the household and made sure the family never paid a cent in taxes.

Like her brothers before her, her education included an easing into the family business. She was too young to handle any responsibility, of course, but she was taught with the assumption that she would. Power dynamics, finances both legal and illicit, etiquette, and all the things she would need to know in order to make a living in the world her family operated in. For a time, her family prospered and young Yelena was just fine with the idea of meeting her family’s expectations of her in this regard.

Even the mighty are still human however. They can get careless. Sergei’s business dealt in illegal gambling, “escorts” and protection rackets. He refused to have anything to do with the drug trade, and encouraged restraint in the black market for weapons. Sergei was powerful enough to have a real impact on the underworld in Gridport, and impactful enough to make powerful enemies.

Watching your family gunned down before your eyes does things to a person. Yelena went through that at age 10. Sergei, Dusanya and Alexei died to gang warfare before managing to consolidate their gains. Saveli disappeared. Miklhail, to his credit, took his sister and fled Gridport. That was the end of his mental tenacity, however, and he died after making one desperate move too many.

Yelena had to learn to survive, starting from the bottom when she up till then learned to live at the top. She abandoned her name to avoid being hunted or used a pawn. She picked pockets, lost fights and learned what it was like to go to bed hungry. Slowly, bit by bit, she got herself back on her feet, reaching a point of relative stability.

At this point, she might well have been able to live out her days in peace. But ghosts don’t die so easily. Sergei’s legacy would not fade into obscurity. Yelena, now going by Talissa, had her own vision for Gridport, her own scores to settle. Her own brother to account for. And she’d need support. Liquidating her assets into Swiss bank accounts and taking a leave of absence from the life she’d built, she approached the GCPD with a proposal: her support for theirs. She would bring down a given number of the worst figures in Gridport’s underworld. And they would in turn arrange for her family’s mansion to fall back into her hands. Discreetly, of course.

With such a pretense in hand, Talissa took the first steps to reclaim what was hers.

Physical description: Talissa is 5’7, 152 lbs. She has red hair, delicate features and cool, deep gray eyes. She has fairly broad shoulders but an otherwise thin frame and long fingers. She bears a large scar across her belly and thinner ones on her arms, though her wardrobe generally ensures these areas remain covered.

    1be9316bc0f56974a844e2b3cadfdcad.jpg

Temperament: Comparing Talissa to an iron fist in a velvet glove would be an oversimplification. She varies her manner to her audience, conveying equal parts sincerity and composure. Unafraid to lose but keeping her limits in mind, she’s willing to make bold moves when she deems the risk worth it. Her past haunts her and the future she desires seems like a long shot even to her, so she focuses on enjoying the present. She might be dead tomorrow after all. Might as well enjoy her glass of negroni today.

    Physicality: 20
    Brutish: 10
    Acrobatic: 10

    Precision: 20

    Long Range:

    Mental: 70
    Composure: 50

    Skill List

Russian: Confident (20XP) [KEY STAT: PROBLEM SOLVING]

Pickpocketing: Confident (20XP) [KEY STAT CLOSE RANGE PRECISION]

Gambling: Confident (20XP) [KEY STAT COMPOSURE]

Charm: Talissa has a gift for people. Be it little changes in mannerisms, accents, or noticing and appreciating the little details, people tend to let their guard down around her, like her a little more and talk around her a little more freely. Advanced. (30XP) [KEY STAT COMPOSURE]

    Unique Power

    Name: Time Upriver

Description in game: Talissa likes it when people put their cards on the table. Even better if they don’t realize it.

Effect: Once per day, Talissa can mark a target that is within 20 feet of her. She can then activate that mark at a later point, observing the target’s recent history as if standing beside them over the past 24 hours. Doing so requires Talissa to all but live in another place and point in time, so all difficulty checks are doubled while her power is activated. While she can skip over periods of time should she deem them irrelevant, she must experience events in the order and speed the target did. Observing five minutes of the target’s history must thus necessarily consume five minutes in the real world.

Will get that fixed! I put the skill brackets higher up when constructing the character and it pushed other categories down.
