On the other hand, Reign was a movie I had higher hopes for. It was a more ambitious film that filled a void in Superman adaptations that Death had been beaten like a dead horse (pun probably intended). It also probably sends the message to WB that whenever they hit a lull in Superman DTV movie sales, they can go back to the "Death of Superman" storyline every 10 years or so, and the consuming public will be OK with it. No matter how annoyed I was that they told another DoS storyline (which is getting up there with "With great power comes great responsibility" and Martha Wayne's pearls) and some of the plot beats it rehashed, Reign was far less satisfying to watch.

Regarding the New 52 Morrison run, there are also aspects of it that I felt were too jumbled and too... Morrison. But like All-Star Superman, if adapted, the Morrison arc would be simplified and distilled to the basic points that broader audiences can enjoy, most notably the characterization of social crusader Supes.
I enjoyed Death and Reign a lot together, personally .

I always figured that for a long time, Superman was synonymous with "... the American way," so seeing him as a commie bastard was one of the funny twists (at the time) you could do with Superman.

I think it was a great story (again, for its time), but all of the deconstructed and transmuted Superman stories right now, it's not the animated movie I want to see in 2020. But in the end, I think it'll be pretty decent and good for the Superman brand. After the five-year break of no Superman solo titles, it's nice to see two Superman movies in 2020.

That's totally what he does best lol. "What if Wolverine was in Dark Knight Returns" "What if the Avengers were formed right after 9/11" and such high concepts. But because he has great understanding with many characters, it doesn't surprise me when he sticks the landing.
If I was feeling uncharitable I would say that it’s “baby’s first Elseworld” and “baby’s first ‘evil’ Superman story” (although I don’t really consider it an evil Superman story myself). It has a fairly simple divergence yet still manages to be a rather fascinating look at who and what Superman is at his core. Also a lot of edgelords probably pick it up because “Superman’s a dictator!” tends to attract that crowd.

Honestly most of Morrison's work I've read seems like it's intentionally trying to make you go, "What just happened? What's happening now?" But maybe that's just me. That said I'm definitely intrigued by the promise of an original story set early in his career, that's a time ripe for potential that we haven't seen much of outside of origin stories.

And Red Son was just an amazing story, so if they manage to pull it off faithfully (fingers crossed) it should make for an amazing film.
I’m not asking for them to adapt the 5-D Imps lol (although I love Vyn, Superman fighting the Devil is awesome). Simply having the t-shirt and jeans Superman tackle corrupt businessmen like Glenmorgan while trying to stay ahead of Lex Luthor and the military, culminating in Supes and his former adversaries teaming up to fight Brainiac would be good enough for me. The first volume is relatively straightforward in my opinion at least.

Red Son could be tricky to pull off. They’ll have to nail the tone set by Millar and not try to ape Injustice. As others have already stated, Red Son Superman wasn’t a villain. He was helping to make the world a better place even in a totalitarian system.

This story could be interesting if done right considering our current political climate. But again, it could go horribly wrong if not adapted well.

    That would absolutely amazing!

I think there are a number of great “Superman: Year One” stories to draw inspiration from. Grant’s version is my all time favorite but theres Byrne’s classic run and the more recent Man and Superman by Marv Wolfman which was also really good. Stories of Superman struggling to find his place in the world and dealing with self doubt before finally becoming the Man of Tomorrow we know and love. I just hope they get Rain Wilson to reprise his role as Luthor. He had the perfect mix of arrogant douche and science geek and nailed Lex.

If bruce timm is directing it i hope he sticks to the source material. Then, i feel it will be fine.
As for the origin story, i want some birthright or American alien being adapted or taken as inspiration.
Morrison's action is great an all but i feel it will get too serious.since, i don't trust them with it. They will try to make it too edgy. These needs to bring in money as well. Edginess might be ditraction. That how i feel.with birthright or American alien you don't run into that risk. It can be funny and have alot of heart.

You know I’m feeling much more optimistic about the 2020s treating Superman right. The 2010s has been a really rough time to be a Superman fan, but having two animated movies to kick off the new decade has me feeling more hopeful about Superman than I have in a long time. Young Justice S4 might have the Supersons, Titans S2 is giving us Lex, Kon, and maybe Clark too, and hopefully WB will get going on the Superman reboot soon. I’m feeling pretty upbeat.

Man I love American Alien but I don’t know if DC will even touch the material after all the Landis controversy.

Its just scenes. they can make changes. They might not even need to credit him. They basically did suicide scene in jldoom without mentioning any of comics writers.

The New 52 as a whole was kind of a train wreck, but Morrison's run is pretty close to perfect (aside from the Jim Lee costume) and is the best contemporary origin retelling he's ever had.

There is no reason that it can't be the basis for this movie. Hell, there's no reason the broad strokes of it can't be in place as his canon origin/early years. DC doesn't want people to forget it happened entirely or else they wouldn't be putting out new trades for it.

Not to rain on any parade, but he might be producing it. Though I think the writer and director are more important in this instance.

He’s probably involved but as long as he’s not writing or directing this I don’t mind. Timm just should never be the head guy on a Superman project imo. Especially this one.

Not sure about the director, Sam Liu. Reign could have been more exciting and moving. It turned out just fine. The director of DoS did an stronger job, imo. Still haven't seen some of those other movies.

Is the writer for Red Son really good? Have no idea who he is, but the writing better be really good.

Oh and Supes looks handsome. Wonder if he wears the trunks in this.. Really hope the graphics are better than other recent movies.

Pretty sure Liu did Death and Reign back to back. The problems with Reign had more to do with the time constraint than anything. Red Son is a three issue mini so I don’t see it having the same problems.
