This is the first I've heard about that. I wish the same could be said for the other Marvel games that have closed down - particularly Avengers Alliance. There's a Redux version being made, but the creator of that is clearly rebuilding it from scratch as an executable instead of an SWF, and there's clearly some missing code and files.

Bleeding Cool posted spoilers for Valkyrie #1, including the identity of who dies (the solicits revealed someone dies, but not who).

good interview, and there, confirms what i was saying in the other thread. He didn't kill Valkyrie just to give the role to Jane, she was already slated to die, and giving the role to Jane afterward was just something that fell into place afterward.

Well he didn’t quite say that, but all story is contrivance. It’s not important really. The idea of Jane carrying another mantle is not exactly radical. It’s not like there was a hugely successful Valkyrie comic in the last couple of decades, or even a hugely successful team book with her in, and it’s not like the previous Valkyrie has gone forever or won’t appear in the comic. Lastly, Brunnhilde was not the only Valkyrie anyway, so even if someone wanted to bring her back for something they probably could if the idea was good enough.

The Jane/Brunnhilde dynamic reminds me a lot of the Hourman dynamic in Geoff Johns' JSA.

I actually like the idea of Jane feeling she has to live up to her newfound gifts and what she accomplished as Thor. That could be an interesting potential character conflict.

Was kind of surprised to see them retaining the secret identity aspect. It looks like she still has the Asgardian "voice" but the physical change isn't as stark as when she was Thor.

I get the sense, comparing her to her Thor form, she's sacrificing overwhelming strength and the lightning powers for more speed and versatility. She's probably a strong as the average Asgardian though, so it would be a fairer arm-wrestle with Sif then, say, JaneThor.

"I liked the idea of something like a mace" Are we sure he wasn't thinking of Hawkgirl at all?

I’d love to see Jane lead a new Defenders comic.

Valkyrie #1 was really good. I love what Jason Aaron did with Jane in his Mighty Thor run and I’m so glad he and Ewing got the chance to write new adventures for this wonderful character.

It might be hard to do better than the previous run but this first issue is a lot of fun and play with really cool concepts. Make sure to get your copie, you definitely won’t regret it !

Oh and on the movie side, I’m so excited to see Jane Fosthor on screen !

No he actually said exactly that. I wasn't talking about her taking up the mantle, but the notion some fans have been throwing around that the decision went like 'I want to make Jane Valkyrie, so I am going to kill off all the Valkyries in order to do that' so that certain fans can lay the blame of their deaths at Jane's feet as another reason to hate on her. When in reality, they were always going to die in the story Aaron planned, and that situation, which was going to happen anyway, presented an opportunity to give her a new role. That is the part he confirmed here, that he looked at the story he had planned with the Valkyries dying, and said the pieces fell into place.

Anyway, I read the first issue, and liked it. Definitely seems to be playing with the role thing and if she is defining the role, or the role is defining her, which seems to line up with what Thor and Loki are going through in their new positions as well. so kind of curious to see where that goes. She is in a position where she can take the role off though, unlike them, so even if the role is kinda calling the shots, she can at least be herself in her civilian identity. But when in Valkyrie mode she did seem to have some concerns that her thoughts were not entirely her own, something she experienced as Thor as well, but I think there she (and I did as well, for that matter) thought that was Mjolnir rather than the broader role.

Also, seems like Bullseye is working for someone, and I have been speculating in the Loki thread that the underground casino with a mysterious owner that Loki wrecked may belong to the Hood. I am wondering if they may be sharing a baddie here, but are coming at him from different angles. This whole situation is starting to look like it fits his MO, the person Bullseye killed would certainly be a first step in a heist on Asgard, something the Hood has attempted before, even if it ended in failure before. But that speculation is based on very little right now, will see what future issues reveal. Just saying, it is a possibility, and could lead to a team up if it is correct which would be fun.

Good start, I'm curious as to what the larger plot may be. Coming from the high flying adventures of The Mighty Thor, I hope the street level antics don't become to mundane.

I have read the same words as you and I don't interpret them the way you do. I think he means that his opportunity came along when he decided how to use the Valkyrior, but he still had to pull the trigger and kill them. Nobody else was telling him to do that. It was his choice. Things fell into place, he saw a new story. That's not the same as saying they were always going to die as a necessary part of the story. It isn't a necessary part of the story. Valkyrie herself could have survived without changing the story significantly.

Not had a chance to read the first issue yet. Just too many interesting books out today.

I'm not saying it wasn't his choice to kill them. I'm just saying that Jane wasn't the REASON he killed them, they were going to die either way. He confirmed that here, imo.

Also, the story did actually require them all to die. It just wasn't for Jane's benefit, (she could have still taken up the role without every one of them dying) it was for Loki's. There is a reason he was unable to move on and got stuck in his dead body. There was no one left to guide him. While as with any other plot point you could argue that they could have found another way to deal with that, as it stands, for his story to play out the way it did, they were going to die regardless of anything that happened with Jane.

is Jane permanently a Valkyrie now? 24-7? Does she have a human "identity" now? Is she Jane Foster of Earth, physician, anymore? Does she "change body forms" or is she in her powered Valkyrie body now all the time?

Maybe. I have been too busy to reread everything recently so I don't fully remember the nuances of that Loki story. But would he have even qualified for Valhalla? I guess we won't know will we? Better that way.

The end notes of this book somewhat suggest that the idea of what to do with Jane came first though.

Which means, yes this book got to the top of my pile and it was better than I expected. I have been conflicted over the whole thing. One of the negative things thrown at Jane early on was 'why couldn't she just be a Valkyrie, why does she have to be Thor?' And as one might expect, people that make such statements are already somewhat closed to the idea that it might actually be necessary for the story for her to actually be Thor.

But, all in all this was a very solid book. It feels very DC though, which is kind of odd. Like The Flash mixed with Wonder Woman. It still has its heart as a Marvel book. We have all the key ingredients here. Maybe it is partly the art. That is better than I expected too. I only took a cursory glance at the previews and they felt more static and quite dark. I need not have worried, although again the inking style and the colouring does remind me of DC.

It's a transforming situation. Her body somewhat changes, her hair grows, she may get taller. I like that they have made it very clear up front that she transforms.

    spoilers:
She has been demoted. Kind of a punishment it seems. Conveniently for a superhero that works with the dying she has been sent down to the morgue as an assistant. Like I said earlier, all story is contrivance.
    end of spoilers

That wouldn't make any sense. Her weapon is a reformed version of Mjolnir from the ultimate universe if I recall, and we saw how strong that hammer was
during the mighty thor run. So while I could see his reservation in him saying her current form is as strong as Thor, seeing as ultimate thor was normally seen as not as strong as 616 thor, she still would be extremely close. Combine that with her Valkyrie powers and I'm pretty sure she's still among the strongest. Especially with Jason as the writer, we saw what he has done with She-Hulk for example, he wouldn't allow a huge downgrade in strength for his most popular character.
