It is now up to every major intergalactic power to try to stop them as they go around destroying various planets.

Anyway, they're pure energy or whatever right? Shouldn't be too hard to make something that can take advantage of that.

They cause some major damage initially, but eventually get technobabble super science dumped on their heads.

Being a race of pure energy is nice, but they still had some pretty set limitations. The Trek crew is not unfamiliar with creatures like this.
