The Santos curse continues. They did manage to do better this weekend, managing a 3-3 draw at home to Fortaleza. They were 3-0 up at one stage though. They are also no longer top of the league in Brazil. All my fault.

I've not watched much football this weekend though. A friend of mine came up from London to visit and I've spent most of the weekend out socialising and catching up with him. I can't comment on United, haven't seen it.

Last weekend it was Bury scrapping for their very existence. Next up is Bolton Wanderers, a club that I have far, FAR less sympathy for. Bolton are one of a clutch of clubs that United fans tend to refer to as our 'plastic rivals'. These are clubs that historically mean little to either United or it's supporters but laughably think of themselves as genuine rivals to the club, frothing at the mouth and generally acting up as much as possible. They wish. Bolton Wanderers and it's fans are a snotty bunch with notions well above their station. I enjoyed their relegation from the Premier League and I'll delight in any further misery they endure.

Not just that. He isn't playing Jan which is odd.

I went to Stafford Rangers v Matlock Town on Saturday. Stafford lost 1-0, but it was how they lost which made it worse. It was a massive defensive cock up that gifted Matlock a goal and Stafford missed a penalty in the 94th minute. Still, the ground has had a fair few changes around the place with a new fans bar being set up under the main stand being one of them. The next game I plan to go to is Stafford Rangers v FC United of Manchester in a few weeks. I'm also going to Crewe v Salford City the week after.

Another good win for Swansea against Birmingham yesterday as well. Joint top of the league and it's best start to a season for over 40 years apparently. Amazing how well we're doing with the resources we've got now.

There are clearly some things going on behind the scenes that Poch does not feel comfortable discussing in public. If there's something personal between him and Jan I hope they sort it out, because while I think Sanchez will come good, he isn't quite there yet.

Bad times for Bury and Bolton fans, hopefully for their fans' sake they can sort something out but it doesn't look good. Liverpool got another three points on Saturday so obviously I'm happy with that, also pleased that United lost (sorry WillieMorgan). Still, early days so I'm not going to get too excited about being top of the league but it is nice to see.

League Cup action tonight, so I'm looking forward to seeing any cup shocks tonight.

Today's 5pm deadline that was issued to both Bury and Bolton Wanderers football clubs by the EFL to both arrange their respective takeovers and get their funds in order expired over three hours ago now. We've still heard nothing from either club or the league. It's looking extremely grim for both sets of supporters. I feel for the Bury fans but not particularly for the Bolton lot.

For anyone that might be wondering what exactly this is about, well, these are two historical north west football clubs whose long standing financial issues have finally come to a head. Bury have spent years dodging from one financial crisis to another. They are a perennial lower league club that constantly struggle for support and income amidst much bigger and more glamorous rivals. Bolton have found themselves in a similar scenario to Bury but have arrived at it from a completely different angle. They spent years in the lucrative Premier League only to get relegated in 2012 and have suffered both a sporting and financial hangover from that ever since. Both clubs are so badly in debt now that they've effectively backed themselves into a corner. Credible new owners are difficult to some by and credit streams have completely dried up. To be frank, if either club does get rescued at the last moment their problems will probably only resurface in five years or so. You can't just get through life by borrowing more and more money and constantly bankrupting yourself. Eventually things come home to roost.

It's a shame, certainly for Bury. Lower league football clubs need to understand that they aren't owed a living though.

So Bury FC are no longer a member of the Football League. After 131 years of play they were expelled from the EFL last night due to insurmountable financial problems. They were one of the 12 original members of the league from that first ever season in 1888-9 also.

If Bolton Wanderers don't sort both their ownership and finances out in the next 13 days they too will follow Bury's demise. The plight of these two clubs has severely undermined League One this season with games involving the pair either being delayed or abandoned altogether. The EFL had to act ultimately. The integrity of the third division (as it was called back in the day) itself was at risk. The last time this happened was in 1992 with Maidstone United suffering the same fate.

Losing 1-2 to Crystal Palace suddenly seems a bit meaningless. Bury fans are waking up today wondering what to do with themselves on a Saturday afternoon for the foreseeable future. This had a big impact on their lives and losing the odd piffling game is nothing compared to that. All football fans should bear that in mind.

So looks like Bolton have been saved. Gutted for Bury but there is a slim chance the EFL could reinstate them seeing as there is an offer still on the table for the club. Hopefully it all comes good for them.

Swansea had a good win in the Coca Cola cup last night. We had a second team out but still beat Cambridge 6-0. We're scoring for fun this season despite selling out main striker from last season in the summer. Tough game at Leeds this weekend though, so our run may come to an end. I'd happily take a point from that game.

Bit of a shame. I really wanted the Bury/Bolton situation to pan out the opposite way that it did. Ah well....

The EFL cannot reinstate Bury now. It just wouldn't be fair. I know that sounds a bit cruel but it's not just about Bury anymore. To back-track on the clubs expulsion now would severely damage the integrity of League One. Bury had already missed five games of the season prior to getting kicked out. What would potentially happen if that had reached eight or nine games? Think of all that backlog of fixtures. It's not fair to all the other clubs in the league to keep on postponing games just because one club is in extreme dire straits. Where was this Brazilian based bid for the club a month ago, when it could have secured the club's place in the league? It's no good now.

Bury based MP's would do well to think about the bigger picture before spouting off on Twitter. The ideal solution for Bury FC now is to find a level of the English football pyramid that will accept them next season and start all over again.

    Small Club Mentality 1-1 United

I've just watched a football club celebrate a home draw and two dropped points with the same levels of gusto that I'd expect to see from a team that's just won the Champions League. Small town club, small town mentality. It exists across the nation.

This United team play with a better level of dedication than last season but a with lack of composure at times. The small town club scored an equaliser that you could see coming a mile off. The over-the-top celebrations from the south coast team, manager and fans at the final whistle really smacked of 'small time' desperation though I've got to say. Is a home draw against Manchester United really as good as it gets for those people? Says it all.

Live football will soon be finishing for me in the main though. When I move house in a couple of weeks I'm gonna have to economise. The sports channels will be the the first victim of this frugality.

An open message to anyone connected with Southampton Football Club:

It's been a few days now since your football team's sporting miracle last weekend in managing to secure a home draw against a very average Manchester United team. Since then, I've been scouring the news and various sports media for any information relating to the open-top bus parade that you must surely have planned to celebrate that immense triumph. Judging from the response at the final whistle from both the Southampton fans and it's manager (whatever his name is), I'd thought that some sort of public celebration was kind of implicit really. I'd been looking forward to watching Sky Sports News or something like that and seeing the streets of your beautiful, brutalist city lined with thousands of fans, eager to bask in the glory of this outstanding footballing achievement. Perhaps someone can let me know when this celebration will be taking place?

Do this right and you could very well eclipse those famous celebrations from the summer of 1976. Obviously that cup final victory is now only the second greatest day in your club's entire history after being usurped by last weekend.

Failing a ticker-tape parade, maybe a statue could be commissioned to commemorate this legendary moment in football history? Whatever-he's-called's post match, fist pumping, Jurgen Klopp impression out on the pitch would be ideal fodder for something like this. Just a thought. Oh, and could you finally let me me know when all of the official club merchandise will be made available? You know the type of stuff I mean, the 'Saints 1-1 Manchester United' celebratory mugs, t-shirts, mouse mats and the like.

I've been too busy moving house to keep this thread updated.

My single-handed jinxing of Santos' current season in Brazil continues. Since making a comment a few weeks ago that they seemed 'unbeatable' (or something like that) their form has crumbled. Their latest setback being a 0-3 home loss to Gremio.

    Sorry Santos.

Pretty decent weekend of footy for me. I went to Crewe v Salford yesterday. First half was all Salford, second half was all Crewe. Crewe scored some cracking goals as well winning 4-1.

Stafford Rangers got a 0-0 draw away at Kidderminster in the FA Cup, and Swansea got a 0-0 away at Bristol City, which I was chuffed with.
