Si Spurrier's Legion story in X-Men: Legacy is so good I can't believe it was ever made.

It's fascinating, surprising, satisfying, emotional, funny --

The art is weird but also perfect for the aesthetic.

-Pav, who hopes you'll give it a shot...

EDIT: What's the scoop on Gillen's unfinished plans?
You were Spider-Man then. You and Peter had agreed on it. But he came back right when you started feeling comfortable.
You know what it means when he comes back

Hi! I'm on the same boat as you, mate!
I've been reading X-Men since I was a child, I began with Claremont and Byrne and left during the 90's (I made an overdose of shoulderpads and exagerated muscles hiding anemic plots!).
I only came back with Morisson's New X-Men and Milligan's X-Force, kept on when Whedon took over and left when Fraction came in.
Since then I've been watching the X-Men from the bench, I only took back recently with Jean Grey's resurrection and the X-Men Red run. I found it enjoyable, appreciated the political subtext and the characterization of Jean, the main character. It was a good way to reintroduce myself to the X-men universe.

Si Spurrier's Legacy is the best series in the last 10 years. Get it for the covers alone. There have been some decent books but nothing ground breaking.

It's been the worst decade for the mutants since the 90s. Thanks to the boycott.

He wrote the most popular version of Cyclops but it went against his centrist bs violence is never the answer ideals so he would have screwed it up eventually. Not to mention his Emma was pretty awful.

I really liked Marjorie Liu’s Astonishing X-Men and James Asmus’ Gambit.

Yeah, I liked Gillen's run, but it was a good thing it ended when it did. His plans were stupid and regressive, for Emma particularly.

    Bunn's Magneto
    X-Men Red

    That's it.

And not counting any of the crossover garbage.
