Jameson didn't want to hire Smythe originally. He was convinced into doing it by another Bugle employee...Peter Parker. Peter needed cash because it was a lean week for villains so he convinced Jameson to hire Smythe's robots thinking it was a jobber he could take out and score some easy cash, he even convinced Jameson to pilot the Spider-Slayer robot.

The Spider-Slayers is Peter's fault more than Jameson.

He also did it to "get even" with Jameson, because of all the crap Jameson made him go through, and by the end of the story, he even pretended to be captured with a costume filled with webs to get a few laughs at Jameson's expense, and losing his costume to do so, Peter was definitely petty back then, and paid the price for it lol.

I love that expression where he decides on his "evil plan". It's really exaggerated and staged evil and then he puts his arms around Jameson and brings him close...it's like that South Park episode "Garden of Betrayal" or you know that Littlefinger dude from Game of Thrones.

And again Ditko's use of hands and gestures throughout all those panels above is superb.

But yeah, Spider-Slayers is totally Peter's fault and doing. Over the years it's been both good and bad for him.

The Spider-Slayers played a big part in that adventure that led Mary Jane to say "yes" to Peter's proposal. And she also came across the Slayers in Louise Simonson's Annual #19. I think the fact that MJ's first pre-appearance comes in this issue (that's her in the bottom panel in that yellow dress and green babushka in the bottom) creates a link between them.

Wasn't that also the first appearance of Alistair Smythe?
