Without wanting to get into an event or read a larger story line, anybody have any single issue recommendations?

A couple of the Graphic Novels are great. Spirits of the Earth & Hooky both take Spidey out of his comfort zone, but are great.
If you're a fan of the Peter & MJ relationship, I recommend Parallel Lives and To Have And To Hold (Sensational Spider-Man Annual #1).
Zdarksy's last issue on Spectacular is also really great.
Among recent stuff. Or older.
Recent Stuff:
Tom Taylor's FNSM #6
Chip Zdarsky's Spectacular Spider-Man #310
Older
Paul Jenkins specialized in many of this, So read up "Read 'Em and Weep" his Spider-Man/kingpin story.
Roger Stern's "The Daydreamers" is maybe the greatest single issue of any Spider-Man comic.
Stan Lee's backup story with Marcos Martin in Spidey Super Sundays in ASM #600 -- "Identity Crisis" (not to be confused with the event story from the 90s of the same name).
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Annual #1
The Leah short story.
In just a few pages Peter David managed to capture the essence of Spider-Man, something that Dan Slott and J. M. Straczynski failed to do in almost two decades aggregate. Three decades if we count Howard Mackie's second stint.

Have fun they are all almost stand alone books.
The more recent stories are mostly all part of long runs.
Amazing Fantasy #15 is my favorite.
"So you've come to the end now alive but dead inside."
Amazing Spider-Man Annual #19 is one of my favorite issues. If you’re an MJ fan, read it.
Guardians of the Galaxy Team-Up #9
I don't blind date I make the direct market vibrate
Thanks for the recs everyone. I've read a few trades, but the only single issue I remember an older issue where he told the kid his identity, which was a good issue.
The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #19 is my second favorite.
The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #28 is my third favorite.
"So you've come to the end now alive but dead inside."
Amazing Spider-Man #400, despite being totally diminished later on, is still one of my favorites.
The question is COMICS, not book store graphic novel shelf books.
However, my opinion on obtaining reading on such as the first Spider-Man story on Amazing Fantasy #15, since the original deal be worth a few houses, can also be read on reprinted single-issue form, such as Marvel Tales #137, Spider-Man Classics #1, or Amazing Fantasy #15: Marvel Milestone Edition.
