In other words, you want to see more movies of the superhero genre featuring female leads and are made not because the situation needs it, but because the writers have a good story to tell?
The fact that this news came out around the time so many people are complaining about the lack of such a movie doesn't make me feel like Sony's intentions for making one developed naturally. I would have been 100% behind this if the news came out before Kevin Feige's comments about waiting for a good story. Also, the fact that Roberto Orci said things that implied Sony didn’t know what to do with the series. This seems awfully like an effort to make themselves relevant. I just can't allow myself to get overly optimistic, you know? Like you've said, it's been a long time, and it's now a rather delicate issue among online fans of the genre.
The key words in this article are 'reportedly' and 'considering' a female led superhero movie.
When and if those words change to 'definitely are' making a female led superhero movie, then it'll be worth speculating who the movie is about.
I'll be honest, I always found the Black Cat to be a bit of a bore in the various minis she has appeared in without Spider-Man. (Sometimes a supporting character is just that, a supporting character. They don't all need to be spun off.) Don't get me wrong, I REALLY do like the character, but it's the interactions with Spidey (and even sometimes MJ) that makes her fun to read about. Not her generic crack team of specialists that help her hack into computers or whatever.
And she grew to love Spider-Man (and eventually Peter Parker) not simply lust after him. The relationship transformed her from amoral burglar to a bone fide hero. Granted, BND undid all of that and now she's back to being a 2 dimensional thief. Either way, it's robably still not too different from Catwoman for general movie audiences though.
Neither Black Cat nor Silver Sable (those are the two most likely possibilities) have really flashy powers. Sable doesn't have any at all and Felicia has these "bad luck" powers that are inconsistently portrayed anyway and wouldn't be expensive to show onscreen. And the types of stuff that both usually do are too out there. So you could probably make a movie about either of them without it having a huge budget. And this also has the added benefit that the movie doesn't have to do gang-buster numbers to still be considered a success.
Ya'll do realize this is bullshit, right?
First of all, 2017 is so far in advance that anything can change between now and then. More importantly, why would they even announce this without actually saying who the character is? It's a PR stunt.
Thats the thing right there. Should a Black Cat movie happen they need to flesh out the character more so that she doesn't come across as a Catwoman rip off. Maybe by keeping her as far from Spider-Man as possible and work on making Felicia her own character that doesn't have to use Spider-Man as a crutch to get the audience into her.
That's the thing. They haven't actually announced anything. This is a report about something that might be happening based on alleged insider information. Which is basically exactly where we've been regarding a female led movie for the last few years, be that from Marvel, DC*, Sony or even Fox.
*Strong rumours are still only rumours until they're not.
