Default Reboot the X-Men: Your Way

I've been thinking a lot about this topic, what with HoXPoX going on and promising to change the franchise at it's core, as well as other threads that are going around right now with similar "change things up" as the premise, such as the Infinity Warps thread... and I'll be honest, certain members have a way of getting the creative juices flowing. Anyway, without further ado...

Reboot the X Men. Do you want to take them all back to the days of the original X Men? Before then? Do so. Do you want to do a soft reboot style kind of thing and maintain some kind of franchise history? You can! Do you want to even keep all of the primary history of the X Men and just further the concept of the franchise? Well, you can do that as well! The general idea here is that you can do anything, and what you do is entirely up to you.

Personally, I believe that there are certain aspects of the franchise that have gotten a bit... heavy. There is a lot.of baggage within the X Men and some people might argue that said baggage adds to the franchise, but I'm not sure that I agree. Similarly, there are a hell of a lot of characters in this franchise, the most of which don't get decent attention because of the sheer amount of them.

So: I would do a soft reboot. Take the X Men back to a simpler time when they were hated and feared and they hadn't gone through numerous extinction level events, where the main players of the franchise hadn't died and come back to life - sometimes multiple times. We'll say it's a few years into the history of the team, ~6 years or so following the formation of the original X Men. Speaking of, the general concept would be the same, but the original X Men would be Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Angel, Storm, and Thunderbird. Beast would be a colleague of Charles and Iceman would be younger.

The concept of the franchise would pick up from the original X Men, now in their early twenties, picking up from where a now deceased (for real, at least at the start) left off and heralding a new generation of X Men. They would be centered at Xavier's, with both a Blue and Gold side to the team as well as a team of New Mutants. Otherwise, there would be other offshoots of the X brand as usual, each focusing on their own concepts. The teams would look something like this:

    Uncanny X Men
The BLUE team, co-led by Cyclops and Rogue. The blue team.is a rapid response squad, reacting as quickly as possible to threats made by and against mutantkind.

    Cyclops
    Rogue
    Gambit
    Psylocke
    Colossus
    Polaris
    Archangel

    Extraordinary X Men
The GOLD team. The gold team are the face of the X Men, going out and taking care of the big battles - practically the Avengers level stuff, but mostly still mutant related and advancing the X Men's cause.

    Phoenix
    Northstar
    Storm
    Thunderbird
    Scarlet Witch
    Bishop
    Penance (Monet)

    The New Mutants
The next generation of mutant heroes, and, well, the teen team. They are currently training to be the best heroes that they can be while also dealing with all of their interpersonal.and extrapersonal drama, while they all ask themselves: how hard is it to be heroes and also deal with trying to get through their adolescence?

    Iceman
    Mirage
    Cannonball
    Magma
    Sunspot
    Magik
    Boom Boom

    X-Factor
The government sanctioned strong right arm of mutantkind, X Factor works closely with both SHIELD and the X Men with the general mission statement of maintaining peace and order throughout the world. They're also just generally trying to make mutantkind's reputation better.

    Banshee
    Omega Sentinel
    Quicksilver
    Shadowcat
    Wisdom
    Sunpyre
    Multiple Man

    X-Force
X-Force is what you might imagine them to be: a team of well minded, like minded individuals who have been brought together to quietly take care of threats to mutantkind before they become an issue. They're unafraid to do what it is that must be done.

    Wolverine
    Kwannon
    Cable
    Mystique
    Sunfire
    Destiny
    X-23

    Exiles
A group of survivors from dead universes who no longer feel as though they have a place in the Multiverse. They've been chosen by the Powers That Be to travel between universes with the express intent of either saving them, or excusing them entirely.

    Blink
    Mimic
    Revenant (Rachel Grey-Summers)
    Morph
    Nocturne
    Sabertooth
    Magneto

Certain characters would be modernized and racebend as necessary (eg. I'm envisioning Iceman as Asian and Magma as dark skinned) in order to make the franchise a bit more diverse. I was also thinking that there would be an X-Men Unlimited anthology series that would be a vehicle to tell stories that would have happened in the past that hadn't been seen, sort of in the nature of DC's Secret Origins series.

X-MEN, an indie band trying to make it on the streets of the big city. Hated and feared by establishments in every borough, this pop group of the atom will go to any lengths to unite their fans and achieve peaceful co-existence with their record-label peers. They're most famous for their alternative cover of The Jam's "Dreams of Children."

    WOLVERINE: Triangle
    JEAN GREY: Acoustic Guitar
    NIGHTCRAWLER: Synthesizer
    WHITE QUEEN: Flute
    ROGUE: Bongos
    CYCLOPS: Lead Vocals
    BEAST: Suspicious Band Manager
COLOSSUS: Former Bassist, kicked out for inappropriate relations with a young fan
    STORM: Current Bassist
ANGEL: Funds the band between gigs. Literally their angel.
ICEMAN: Is called Iceman because he's the one tasked with getting Jean's favorite frozen cherry pops whenever she asks.
XAVIER: Cyclops' disappointed dad who just want his son to have a real job and pay attention to his kids.

Their main rivals are the NEW MUTANTS, a Death Metal sensation signed up with the ESSEX label, comprised of rowdy kids from the Lehnsherr Center for Juvenile Rehabilitation. They are most famous for countless sold-out concerts and their #1 album, "TECHNARCHY" and multiple hit singles such as "Satan Teddie", "Apocalypse, EVERY COUPLE OF YEARS", "I Know You Are But What Am Eye-Boy?!", and "The Rosenberg Slaughter."

    MAGIK: Double Electric-Guitars
    MOONSTAR: Rhythm Guitarist
    SUNSPOT: Bass
    CANNONBALL: Drums
    WOLFSBANE: Lead Screaming
    STEPFORD CUCKOOS: Background Screaming
    KARMA: Depressed Band Manager
CYPHER: SFX Specialist & Part-Time Synth God
    BOOM-BOOM: Spontaneous beat-boxing
MONDO: Stands behind the band during performances and stares deep into your soul. Voted Sexiest Man Alive multiple times.

Both bands must face the temptation of DRUG ABUSE from THE BROTHERHOOD, which is just three guys.

PYRO: The weed guy. Desperate for attention.
RAVEN & IRENE: His concerned parents.
TOAD: Man of mystery. Smells funny.
BLOB: Pyro's childhood friend. Does community service in his spare time. Environmentalist.

    Reboot the X-men my way

    1. Not in 616 Marvel
    2. "Hard" ish Sci-fi no magic, Gods, fantasy monsters or extreme concepts like reality warping
    3. No world-destroying powers and every power has weakness or requires stamina to use.
    4. Hate and Fear is always a thing because they are no other superhumans or power being initially
    5. Mutants are caused by what they are calling a "virus" that affects people who have X-gene, Mutants are not another species in the classic sense.
    6. Given that Aliens, Robots, and stuff from alternate dimensions will still be happening and natural disasters the view on mutants in the world could possibly change to Avengers like heroes and franchise would go in that direction if it makes senses

The general goal is to have a world where mutant persecution on a large scale makes sense and it is easy for them to slip back into hating mutants. I am fine with X-men in the 616 but if they are 616 Marvel I think they should lean towards being superheroes more and they need to use everyone hates mutants more sparingly. The stories that seem to want to tell would work better in a world when mutants were "first" discovered it hit like the zombie apocalypse. Thousands to millions of people spontaneously manifesting powers and people don't know if mutants could possibly be a threat to destroy the planet at some point.

I'd buy that. They could have done this as a Secret Wars tie-in.

Oh God, if I have to read another iteration of 'struggling minorities hated and feared' I'll slit my wrists. I respect the idea but plot-wise I just can't get behind a reboot that rehashes the same old misery.

I wouldn't change much at the start, however I WOULD drop the sliding timescale.

Characters would age, grow, and move on. Death would be treated very seriously and not as a revolving door, and bringing someone back would require EXTRAORDINARY circumstances. As the older characters die or retire, the younger characters would succeed them, so each generation would actually have the opportunity to BE the X-Men. Characters with longevity in their powers (Logan, Sabretooth, etc.) would therefore ACTUALLY MATTER as something other than a means to let them appear in their prime in random fast-forward/AU or flashback stories.

Xavier is his mother’s surname. Farouk is his father’s. He was named after the Prince of Wales.

    X-Men

Newly-arrived to the afterlife, Theon Greyjoy and Varys the Spider come face to face with the Lord of Light, who promises them a boon as compensation for their unwillingly sacrificed manhoods. After initial squabbling, the two agree to use the boon to go back to the beginning of the story in order to convince Ned Stark and King Robert of both the threat of the White Walkers and of Cersei's incest.

I'm already feeling this. Yes. Also, what else is there to do when you're laid up in bed with nothing else to pass the time?

    Also. Snoop. Just. Yes.

I like extinction stories and that is the type of story would tell. In the end most mutants would be killed by humans and the world moves on.

Basically, get to where My Hero Academia is but with the X-Men.

Assuming that I would be given the X-Men, I'd run a single narrative with at most two other books. The narrative would move forward, with mutants actually becoming more prevalent than humans and the resulting instability being the focus of the book. Cultures would change rapidly, the doomsday clock would move closer to midnight, and the X-Men would intervene with the world at the brink of war. I don't have rosters yet, but Uncanny X-Men would task the team with the global threats that would plunge the world into war; X-Men would deal with the domestic issues as the face of America changes; maybe a New Mutants book or X-Force, but no ideas for those yet.
    Does it need doing?
    Yes.
    Then it will be done.

I've been making my own Hickman infographics (as seen in previous threads) and went a bit crazy:

    Ongoing Team Books:
X-MEN - Mutant narrative steering book that is perhaps overly aware of their public perception and the weight of that falls heavily on these characters. They are intimidating and can be mutantkind's biggest weapons, but their story will be about relying on each other as the gravity of their celebrity takes its toll.

    Magneto
    Marvel Woman (Jean Grey)
    Storm
    Cyclops
    Apex (Monet St. Croix)
    Synch
    [Shen] Xorn

X-FORCE - This book lets the young mutants within get to choose their own path under the careful guidance of an experienced line-crosser.
    Citizen X (Roberto da Costa)
    Psykey (Kwannon)
    Anole
    Mercury
    Prodigy
    Wind Dancer
    Mondo

MARAUDERS - Very much more of a street-level team compared to the others. They're more blue collar to the X-Men team's white collar. Marrow's roots with the Morlocks and her relationships with Gambit and Emma play into her role heavily.
    Shadowcat
    Iceman
    Emma Frost
    Marrow
    Gambit
    Bishop

EXCALIBUR - A team based on exploration, mistrust, and accountability. Bright backdrops with wacky elements cut with genuine tension, especially between the M-Day clique and Wanda that hopefully is a nuanced redemption arc for them all.
    Captain Britain (Betsy Braddock)
    Nightcrawler
    Scarlet Witch
    Rictor
    Jubilee
    Moonstar

    Ongoing Solo Ensembles:
WOLVERINES - Special mission in Madripoor when the Hound Program and the Weapon X program link up and station themselves in the country. Long-term mystery that forces the clan to work together, along with new ally Norio (of the Raksha).
    Wolverine (Logan)
    X-23
    Norio
    Daken
    Honey Badger

ROGUE & THE BROTHERHOOD - Basically the Brotherhood have Moira X info, perhaps leading to the whereabouts of Moira and Professor X, but are only willing to share with Rogue.
    Rogue
    Destiny
    Mystique
    Pyro
    Pulse

    And then the supporting characters:
    KRAKOA SUPPORT
Members: Beast, Tourniquet (Cecilia Reyes), and Hijack

X-CORPS (largely appearing in X-Men) - International ambassadors and recruitment program, strengthening their ties to Wakanda and the Avengers.
Members: Manifold, Cannonball, Wolfsbane, Chamber, Armor, Bling!, and Hollow

HELLFIRE TRADING CO. (largely appearing in Marauders)
Members: The Cuckoos, Rockslide, Husk, and Sebastian Shaw; formerly Christian Frost

Then there's the supporting characters who will be mainly in non-X-Books
MERX FOR HIRE (Deadpool supporting characters)
    Shatterstar
    Boom Boom
    Blink
    Warpath
    Risque

MAGIK solo series mostly apart from the X-Universe

    Villains:

    I. MORLOCKS
II. SCAVENGERS - The X-Men's Wrecking Crew
III. ACOLYTES - Basically the anti-Wanda/mutant magic crew
    IV. MLF - Mutant anarchists

    V. THE UPSTARTS - Next stage in Hellfire politics, profiteering on their fellow mutant's misfortunes
VI. THE PURIFIERS - Self-hating mutants working with the humans, Laurie is really a reanimation of Persephone, who I forgot to include. Rest of the lineup will be new characters.
VII. BROTHERHOOD - Hoarders of prophecy and intel with an eye for power

VIII. HARBRINGERS - New age Marauders, assassins that literally feed on death and chaos
    IX. THE HORSEMEN
    X. THE ASCENDERS - Aligned with the Human/Machine alliance

I'd keep the villains as villains and establish each as their own threat and niche in the grander scheme of things.
