A couple of the Graphic Novels are great. Spirits of the Earth & Hooky both take Spidey out of his comfort zone, but are great.

Paul Jenkins specialized in many of this, So read up "Read 'Em and Weep" his Spider-Man/kingpin story.
Roger Stern's "The Daydreamers" is maybe the greatest single issue of any Spider-Man comic.
Stan Lee's backup story with Marcos Martin in Spidey Super Sundays in ASM #600 -- "Identity Crisis" (not to be confused with the event story from the 90s of the same name).

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Annual #1
The Leah short story.
In just a few pages Peter David managed to capture the essence of Spider-Man, something that Dan Slott and J. M. Straczynski failed to do in almost two decades aggregate. Three decades if we count Howard Mackie's second stint.

Thanks for the recs everyone. I've read a few trades, but the only single issue I remember an older issue where he told the kid his identity, which was a good issue.
