In Austria, when the artist now known as Friedensreich Hundertwasser was a little boy, he and his mother were in danger of being sent to the camps (as were his mother's family), because she was Jewish. So she had him join the Hilter Youth, to hide the fact they were Jewish and pose as being Christian. This experience stayed with him and affected his attitude toward authority. He died in 2000, but his work was about celebrating nature, saving the environment and giving people the freedom to live as they chose. His architecture avoided any straights lines, because those reminded him of the regimented order of the Hitler Youth. There are no straight lines in nature, he argued.

As talked about earlier, it doesn’t surprise me that antisemetism was as common even before World War II, not just because its encouragement in organizations like the Hitler Youth, but also when keeping in mind the prior history of antisemitism, whether it’s the Crusades and the like, that I don’t think was widely evaluated properly and put into question for a long time until after World War II, with agencies like UNESCO making a denouncing statement of scientific racism/master race ideas in 1950:

"The biological fact of race and the myth of 'race' should be distinguished. For all practical social purposes 'race' is not so much a biological phenomenon as a social myth. The myth of 'race' has created an enormous amount of human and social damage. In recent years, it has taken a heavy toll in human lives, and caused untold suffering". - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_racism

No matter how wrong it might be, the winner's examples of "their ignorance and hatred" is usually the loser's standard of moral rectitude and the natural order of things.

Hitler was a good communicator, and his speeches spoke to many Germans about what they considered to be injustices in their society. The fact that most common Germans had no idea what the Nazis were really all about is probably more due to the lack of mass media and control by the party over the media than it had to do with most Germans being complicit.

Beware of those in power who are charismatic and those who control the media.

And that the Germans that did know what the Nazis were all about surely had no hesitation to join them due to the institutional antisemitism in Germany, with said group forming to take advantage of this so as to lure more suckers into their selfish cause. Considering how we live in a post-World War II world and the status of the world today, suffice to say, antisemitism doesn't go away soon enough.

Hitler was never elected in by democratic means, He was appointed Chancellor of Germany by then President Hindenburg (who was in his late 80s). Through legal and illegal means was able to nerf the power of the Reichstag (parliament) by forcing through the Enabling Act of 1933 and then ran Germany by full decree with old man Hindenburg signing off all along the way. The Nazi party then constructed a not so legal document "Law Concerning the Highest State Office of the Reich," that would declare Hitler the full and unchallenged leader as Führer and Reichskanzler of Germany for life upon the death of Hindenburg... Hindenburg died the next day. The "people" voted through the puppet Nazi controlled Reichstag to give Hitler's decree some degree of legality. Boom Hitler and the Nazi party are in charge of every aspect of German government.

You see, the German experience with democracy with the Wimmer Republic was not so great. With the huge burden that the Treaty of Versailles put on them and then the global "Great" Depression this was the hardest time in history for the German economy. Hitler was not only a passionate speaker but also an opportunist. With the political parties at each other causing nothing to get done by the chaotic government the conditions in Germany went from bad to worst. The Nazi party showed up and did things to show the people that they did not need democracy that it was the republic that was stopping the progress and keeping them hungry and that they should be voted in to office to control the Reichstag to bring order and purpose to the country.. They also threw in that Jews and commies as the reason they were in this mess in the first place. It was the perfect storm in Germany and that is how Hitler came to power. There was more than charisma and propaganda (though there was a lot of it) that put him in the big chair, his rise to power from a nobody could not have been done without the insane political climate of the time.

Anti-Semitism has been though out history from the Holy Roman Empire on (and even before if you read some early Christion text). It was not radical for people to go along with it, not to say they were all down with the complete extermination and annulation of the Jewish people more likely they just wanted them out of Germany.

When a people get to the point the Germans were at, its easy to fish around for a scapegoat. And yes we still do that today when times get tough. Its always easy to point fingers, but hard to do what it actually takes to right oneself.

When I was still in my teens, I got a job working at a rehabilitation centre for people with body movement problems. I worked in the kitchen and my immediate boss was a thick, blonde woman with a bit of a German accent. She told me how when she was a little girl in Germany they were taken out of school during Kristallnacht [November 1938] to throw things at the windows of Jewish homes and buildings. Her husband, who also worked in this centre, in the housekeeping department, he was from Poland. When the Nazis invaded, he was forced into the German army, in the tank corps.
