Has there ever been an explanation about how he can no longer talk beyond I Am Groot? He was completely verbose speaking in full and complete sentences in his first appearance but now he isn't. Or is just one of those retcons like how Starlord is no longer an astronaut who was abducted by aliens and now was a child whose Daddy came looking for him?

I have no idea. The whole larynx thing makes sense, but in his appearances written by Giffen, he has had no trouble speaking beyond those three words.

A modern version of the Howling Commandos. Specifically, the six-issue series written by Keith Giffen in 2005-6. The first picture I posted is from that series, and here's another. The design shares a lot of similarities with the movie version.
