Its always been a popular type of atmosphere for non-canonical stories. The reasons are probably many-fold, but its definitely not just a recent thing. This was done a lot with the Elseworlds line in the 90s too.
"They can be a great people Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you. My only son." - Jor-El
During Rebirth, there was an Elseworld with Dick as the central character where he had taken away most of the meta powers in the world.
Setting was after the birth of his son with Starfire (son was like 8-12 or so), and merely in the future (though both Bruce, and later Alfred, were dead by the end of it). But not post-apocalyptic at least, and with a good ending with hope as the central focus.
And Lois Lane as a Blue Lantern. Odd, but I was okay with it.
I feel like DC wants their next version of the DC universe to be set in a post apocalyptic setting.
Don't forget (too late) the dreadfully boring Futures End.
