I know some people might not like this but I would like to see a Marvel fighting game with a roster that includes the street level, more martial arts oriented characters of the Marvel Universe. It's limiting and could potentially be just a reskin of Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter or Tekken, but if it's got a good concept and story behind it, I think it would work.

The roster could include but not be limited to:

    1. Captain America
    2. Black Widow
    3. Hawkeye/Ronin
    4. Deadpool
    5. Wolverine
    6. Daredevil
    7. Elektra
    8. Iron Fist
    9. Shang-Chi
    10. Psylocke
    11. Karnak
    12. Black Panther
    13. Moon Knight
    14. X-23
    15. White Tiger (Ava Ayala)
    16. Bullseye
    17. Gamora
    18. Fat Cobra
    19. Taskmaster
    20. Gambit
    21. Echo
    22. Mantis
I'd prefer the reverse. Drop the street levelers, and let the big boys play.

First, the MCU gave Black Widow a unique fighting style that I've seen a lot of action heroines afterwards rip off. The scissor kick/leg take down thing seems played out now, but when Black Widow first did it in 2010 nobody knew what the hell she just did and it became her thing. Incorporate that into her fighting style and she already stands out. Second, Black Widow has a lot of potential as a tech oriented fighter considering she's a spy. Handguns, stun batons, stun disks, tonfas, grapple hooks, grenades, hell even the pepper spray can make her feel unique. She can be very similar to Sonya Blade from Mortal Kombat if someone works hard enough for it.
I'd have no problem with Black Widow or Elektra, myself.

My favorite Mortal Kombat fighters to play were always the ninjas: Scorpion, Kitana, Mileena, Reptile, Sub-Zero, Jade, Smoke...
And they were all just pretty much recolors of a male and female ninja template.

I could see Black Widow throwing stun discs and doing a Scorpion-like dash kick from behind.

Where's the fun in that? Crossover fighters welcome all characters regardless of canon power levels. That's half the fun to begin with!

I think traditionally the big problem with a Marvel fighting game is that casual audiences know a lot more characters and expect that much more. With DC you honestly just need Justice League and Teen Titans and some Batman villains and you’re good. That’s why I think it’s more likely that they would do a game specific to a team like the Avengers or X-Men.

Oh god, please no. That's boring! Plus, I don't see how that reasoning even holds up. Marvel vs. Capcom, especially 3, drew from all the sides just fine.

Anyways, the main issue I would say is that casuals base a character being "worthy" on if they appeared in a movie or not. I remember in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, there were people complaining about having such "obscure" and "worthless" characters like M.O.D.O.K., She-Hulk, X-23, Taskmaster, Iron Fist, Nova, and Rocket Raccoon. Let's not even get started on Shuma-Gorath...

Never mind that these are characters that people who read the comics like, and have rich histories in the lore. Also, never mind things like "gameplay potential" as some of these lesser-knowns have the blueprint to create a cool moveset in a fighting game, which is kind of important. MvCI being "MCU vs. Capcom" gave us a bunch of normal people who generically punch and use guns or some minor gadget like shock gauntlets, a shield, or claws, and little variety in style. That's one of the reasons why the roster was so boring.

I guess they have to appear in a movie to get the "cred". They're also like sheep, because if a character does get featured in a popular movie, then they'll act like they're suddenly not a waste anymore. Such as Rocket Raccoon being in Guardians of the Galaxy and X-23 in Logan.

That's why a smart developer pays these people little, if any, mind and just does what they think is best. Sometimes, the audience doesn't know what they actually want, and it's up to the creator not to give them what they "know" they want, but what they truly desire even if they don't like it. Because the alternative is worse.

Oh I totally agree. Since a fighting game is likely to be based on the comics you definitely want that mixture, though clearly having some recognition of MCU types alongside the fan favourites helps! (She Hulk shortly won’t be in that situation you described either). Ultimately a think a developer should just think of the characters that they think can work and are interesting, that suits any story content included and the like.

I honestly think that using Secret Wars as a template is ideal since the original event included a nice mix of hero groups and villains, and you can have three different campaigns - Avengers, X-Men and the villains - with Galactus, Doom and the Beyonder as bosses. I might try and think of a logical roster shortly...

The Original Secret Wars would be a good idea for the story. Heroes and Villains get warped to Battleworld and have to battle each other, and would allow it easily to add new characters who would be warped to Battleworld.

My Inital Line up would be:

    1. Spider-man
    2. Captain America
    3. Iron Man
    4. Thor
    5. Black Widow
    6. Hawkeye
    7. Scarlet Witch
    8. Vision
    9. Mr. Fantastic
    10. Human Torch
    11. Invisible Woman
    12. The Thing
    13. Cyclops
    14. Wolverine
    15. Rogue
    16. Storm
    17. Jean Grey
    18. Wasp
    19. Daredevil
    20. Captain Marvel
    21. Dr. Doom
    22. Doc Ock
    23. Magneto
    24. Ultron
    25. Super Skrull
    26. Deadpool
    27. Taskmaster
    28. Loki
    29. Carnage
    30. Kang
    31. Mr. Sinister
    32. Crimson Dynamo
    33. Abomination
    34. Sabretooth
    35. Kingpin
    36. Green Goblin
    37. Enchantress
    38. Mystique
    39. Punisher
    40. Typhoid Mary

Hi, lurker here, coming out of the shadows to share my love of building fighting game rosters. I had the same idea as you a while back in that a Marvel Fighter by Arcsys would be amazing, I mean look at how gorgeous Guilty Gear looks. I built my roster about a week ago and based it around who I thought could be added based on what the MCU is doing right now, with a bit of bias (Shuma Gorath, i mean come on he was in MVC2-3 for like no reason you can’t not include him). I just hope the image sends I haven’t quite figured this out yet.BB162C32-981D-41F3-B588-637047784C3A.jpg

This is my AVX inspired roster I did a while back - it’s probably way too many characters for launch and not enough villains but I think it’s got a good roster based on the 2012 event.

yes, but keep it fun, not too dark themed like Injustice is.

Four characters I'd like to see in a major Marvel fighting game are Monica Rambeau, Quake, Caeira and Black Cat.
