I think the biggest problem Crisis and History of the DC Universe had going forward was the influx of new egos over time.
No one is willing to step back and let someone else get the credit for DC's success.

Early casualty: the initial Justice League of America lineup was Batman, Flash (Barry Allen), Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Green Arrow, the Atom (Ray Palmer), and Hawkman. Batman, Green Arrow, the Atom, and Hawkman were deleted as founders within months of HISTORY, but Black Canary was added.
