Default Wolf Pack vs. 1 Male lion

8 wolves. 1 Lion. Rocky Mountain battleground.

...I have no idea if the typical wolf pack is more or less then 8.

I’ve seen a few videos of lions vs hyenas. The hyenas (who I believe are comparable to wolves physically with slight differences in power, speed and endurance) will harass female lions if they outnumber them but they seem to run whenever a big male lion comes charging in.

Bloodlusted, I guess 8 wolves could do it but even if they win they’re gonna be in a world of hurt I would imagine.

Hyenas are strong scavengers, and while they live in groups their SOP when clashing with other predators is to bully tired predators away from their prey. As far as I know, they don't quite have the same level of pack tactics that wolves possess.

Wolves should win this if they play it smart. The rocky mountain terrain favours them. They're endurance hunters with plenty of room to move, have great coordination and plenty of tracking and intelligence ability.

They don't have to engage the obviously bigger, stronger and more durable lion in a pitched battle. Lions lack stamina, and this here is a lone lion on mountainous terrain. A long period of harassment will wear the lion down until it eventually can do little but lie there as the wolves tear into it.

Make this a lion pride and the dynamics change drastically even if you massively increase the number of wolves.

Wolves should wear down the lion pretty easily. A pack of 8 is just too much for a single lion to handle.

They're actually at least as good predators as lions, and often end up being bullied away from their prey by said lions. Recent research on them has upset the common perception of them. Some interesting (and weird!) stuff here and here.

...not contesting your wolf/lion answer, just picking at the hyena point.

I actually made this thread because of the various videos I've seen where a male Lion will scatter a whole cluster of Hyenas. The footage is incredible.

Yeah, lions are nasty, though they are not necessarily the best hunters. Rather, they are organized, intelligent by animal standards, and utterly barbaric. They kill hyena cubs and don't eat them, instead leaving them there as a message to get the hell out of their territory. They organize packs of young males to depose older males and steal their harems. And they steal the kills of other predators on a routine basis. Their surprisingly sophisticated social abilities don't help this lone lion, though.

The implication in this video is that a Lion can comfortably engage nearly 10 Hyena.

    Also this
    https://youtu.be/mESuu8PK3Pc
Skip to 1:20. The 20+ Hyena had no problem harrasing 3 lioness, but the second the big dude shows up they scatter and dont come back.

Of course, Rumbles Bloodlust is a thing to consider.

this is probably one of the more famous Lion documentaries

Basically a single Male Lion who was kind of a Hyena killing specialist in the space of a few days ran into the middle of a large Hyena pack and killed the Matriarch before any of the others could do anything. Twice.

Also there's generally a mindset that Hyenas are small, this is usually because they're pictured next to 500 lb Lions and other large African animals, spotted Hyenas if anything trend larger than Gray Wolves. Hyenas in Zambia for instance AVERAGE 153 lbs and some get up towards 200 lbs

This is also another nice clip. Basically, 1v20 the Lion is in a bit of trouble (mostly due to tiring out). 2v20, the Hyena run the hell away.

Yeah, but if you... man, we're getting into weird analogy territory, like if you disintegrated Superman's arms he wouldn't be able to go "fool! Little did you know that my arms and I are one and can be remade from me!" and will his arms back into being from pure nothingness. - Pendaran
