Another modernernised, loose adaptation of a Lovecraft story. Grad students go to an old cabin where a century earlier, some old nut conjured up a demon. Things go about as you'd expect.

Third appearance of the Necronomicon of Abdul al-Hazred in a movie this year. (Name aside, the Evil Dead book has a completely different origin and purpose)

Pretty good creature design, but the house is lacking. Unless the magic is supposed to have turned it into a TARDIS it's just way too small in the external shots for all the running around and getting lost that happens in the movie.

I enjoyed the first one when it came out, back when the zombie craze was still on the rise. I rewatched it ahead of the new one, probably the first time I've seen the entire thing in ten years. It holds up pretty well, with Woody Harrelson stealing the show. Shorter and lighter on actual story than I remembered.

I'm hard pressed to think of another instance where a long-separated sequel to a comedy was actually good. Good news, this is no Blues Brothers 2000, it's actually a worthy followup.
Zoey Dutch plays (against type, from what I've seen) a fairly cliche dumb blonde...but she plays it so well that it's amazing. She damn near steals the movie, she's fantastic. There's a little more plot and the world feels a bit more fleshed out (pun intended) this time around. There are callbacks to the original but it isn't just a replay of the same thing the way Hangover II was to Hangover. Odd as it may sound, I'd call this a feel-good violent zombie comedy, the first one had a couple heavy moments that this one forgoes. I don't even watch Walking Dead anymore, I'm all zombied out, but I'm glad they made this. If it's five or even another 10 years before a third one, that's OK by me, so long as they make it well.

Neither movie is perfect, certainly not the most clever or insightful writing to be found, but the characters have a fun dynamic and it's a pleasure to watch their post apocalyptic misadventures.

Does it explain how/why Damien Karris and the cop are supposed to have been best friends according to 3, when 1 shows them meet for the first time shortly before the possession business all goes down?

This is one of those remakes that's hard to say anything about besides "not as good as the original".

Because it's not BAD in any way, it's very well made. But it follows the Frederic March version so closely and doesn't really do anything better and (IMO) does a couple of things not as well, and by the end of it you're kind of left wondering what the point was.

Heh, if nothing else, it shows how Kinderman starts friendships really quickly.

Slasher Wednesday. This one lives up to the title, in fact the kills start before the party does. The slasher is an escaped madman who favors a big power drill not much in the way of motive or backstory. This is an unusual 80s horror movie in that it was directed by a woman. It's a spoof, but it does have more intentional dark comedy than most Halloween ripoffs of the era.

Where the first movie was just a Halloween rip, complete with Jamie Lee Curtis, this is crazy supernatural possession/haunting/slasher. I guess it takes place in the same school, but I'm not sure there's anything that's actually a sequel about it. I don't even want to spoil why Mary Lou's ghost is so murderous...her death scene in the opening has to be seen to be believed.
If I had to describe the movie, I'd say its like a cross between A Nightmare on Elm Street 2 and Carrie.

Vampire drama, more style than substance, quite deliberately so I think. Tony Scott makes every shot look like it could go in a big budget music video.

I liked this okay, probably right up there with 1 and 3 in terms of the "good" entries in the series. But I felt like the weakest part was Freddy himself. The darker, scarier Freddy had all the traits of the previous character that I didn't like (mainly inconsistent abilities and motives) and lacked the one I did (his sense of humor). I wish they had picked a lane; either kept him as a playful Freddy since the demon apparently liked the character anyway, or had him go full-on unearthly and demonic. Having him get stabbed in the leg by a kitchen knife and then limping after the kid for the rest of the ending didn't exactly make him feel like a badder threat than previous installments.

This movie peaked in the first five minutes with Bauhaus playing Bela Lugosi’s Dead. Everything was downhill from there.

Little known horror spoof/parody. I read about this years ago when it got a fun review on a b-movie site. One of the characters is basically a (somewhat more obnoxious) version of Jaime Kennedy's character in scream. This guy has seen every horror movie and immediately starts assuming they they're in a horror movie scenario. Very low budget, which works fine for the movie, except when it comes to the acting.

You're not wrong. Though, I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't a Bowie cover. But, Susan Sarandon made a couple scenes interesting.
