Review: While my main goal was to stick to films I had not seen this season, I couldn't help but dip into an old favorite of mine for a change of pace. Not really much to say other than this is one of my must-sees for the season.

Definitely feels like a cheat, as it would be a stretch to consider this a horror movie.

But I'm pretty sure I included Venom last year, so screw it, this isn't even my most egregious cheat.

    October 11th. 17 - Night of the Demon (1957) . 18 - Necronomicon (1993)

Also known as Curse of the Demon. A skeptical investigator offends an occultist and is told he only has days to live until a demon will kill him. Feels very much like a prototype for Drag Me to Hell. Some of the effects are quite well done.

My second H.P. Lovecraft adaptation of the season. This one is an anthology, with a framing story of Jeffery Coombs as (not at all historically accurate) Lovecraft reading tales from the Necronomicon itself. In this movie it seems like the Necronomicon is a singular magical artifact. The first story, starring Bruce Payne, is the best of the lot, and with some more care could have stood as its own movie. The second stars David Warner, who is a bit wasted in a script that feels undercooked. The third one is just crap, undone by bad acting, writing, and over-the-top visuals. Curiously, I don't recall having read or heard of this movie before this year.

It's about a murderous clown, what could be more Halloween than that?!

Now, I've considered throwing on Batman '89, and I'll admit it feels like a stretch.

Slowly working my way through the Hellraiser catalog (the ones in my DVD collection at any rate), two more to go and I can move on to something else. Watching these again after a few years has been fun, and, so far, tend to be better stories than I remember upon initial viewings, at least having some interesting ideas even if the execution isn't always the greatest. I will say though, Hellworld is by far the weakest entry, pretty much as I remembered, Lance Henrikson gives a fairly anemic performance. Still a curiosity for featuring a pre-Man Of Steel Henry Cavill and pre-Vikings Katheryn Winnick.

A man practicing Egyptian sorcery plans to return from the dead, but the magical jewel he needs to be buried with is coveted by some dubious characters. It's almost like another Mummy movie with Karloff, with no actual mummification anywhere.

Vincent Price is a horror actor whose most famous role seems to be killing people, and he's wondering if he's responsible. The movie started with footage from The Haunted Palace being screened, and several other Price films make cameos. It works pretty well, but one or two of the kills really needed more blood. And the ending doesn't really make sense. The title is misleading, there is no Madhouse per say, and the film takes place in various locations, but mostly a TV studio.

For those who don't know, think a post-apocalyptic Castlevania anime and you're on the right track. I like this one better than the first movie, with a more interesting story and cast of characters, better action scenes, and much better animation. Years ago I saw the English audio version, which was written around the same time and seemed pretty well done, except for the bizarre change of "dhamphir" to "dunpeal." Dhampir is an actual word for half-vampires, so I don't know how the hell they messed that up. That aside, I'd say the English version is just fine if you don't like reading subtitles. Watching it subbed this time, I went back and checked to see what some of the difference in dialogue were, most them just look to be variations on how things are phrased with the same basic idea getting across.

I went into this solely on word of mouth (and a desire to justify the cost of my Shudder subscription), not knowing a thing about it, and I'm so glad I did. And the best thing I can say is that I highly recommend it, but also recommend you go in knowing nothing. Very impressive, very fun, deserves all the praise it's currently receiving.
