Once upon a time, there was an R-rated, direct-to-video Doctor Strange ripoff starring Jeffery Coombs. Who knew? Apparently, the story behind this is that it was planned to actually be Doctor Strange at some point, but the deal expired or fell through. So Full Moon Entertainment changed just enough of the script to not get sued, and boldly put "based on an original idea" in the credits. The resulting movie is not good, of course. But it's not bad enough to be a "classic" like the Italian Captain American or Roger Corman's Fantastic Four. The mess of a script seemingly can't remember if the Doctor and his nemesis are humans who've learned magic, or immortal beings from another realm entirely. There are "demons from the fourth dimension" that are just...stop motion troll guys. Brian Thompson plays the bad guy.

The good: Oldman! Hopkins. Tom Waits. The score. The costumes. The sets. The Brides. Winona Ryder's beauty. The prologue that provides Dracula's origin story. The epic, gothic romance feel to it. The gallons of blood.

The bad: Keanu speaking. Old Dracula's hairstyle. Keanu speaking. Keanu with fake looking grey hair. A sometimes frenzied pace that might confuse viewers who aren't familiar with the story. Keanu speaking.

The ugly: Dracula's final old man face. Tom Waits.

The questions: When Van Helsing stands at the cliffside and yells "Dracul!", was that Coppola paying homage to Rocky IV? Is Lucy actually promiscuous or does she just playfully talk that way? Is Jack Seward a morphine addict? Why is Van Helsing acting like a horny drunk ******* some of the time?

Anyway, I've always enjoyed this movie. Hell, I'd be thrilled if Coppola wanted to do a sequel. Just say it's 30 years later and the Harkers have been living in America to get away from the memories, that we don't have to worry about accents again. Maybe Dracula returns in the flesh, maybe he's tainted Mina's son, maybe they run into Drac's daughter...whatever, just get Coppola all the wine he wants and let him go nuts.

I used to not like this installment in the Hammer Dracula series too much, both because Peter Cushing was gone and because of Christopher Lee's well-known lack of dialogue. But I've come to appreciate how good it is. The production values are great, Father Sandor is the best of the non-Cushing Dracula opponents, and Dracula himself is as threatening as he was in the first movie (he becomes a bit of a goof-ass the longer the series goes on).

    18b. From Beyond (1986)

First time watching this one; another Stuart Gordon/Jeffrey Combs/Barbara Crampton joint loosely adapting a Lovecraft story. It's about a machine that allows humans to perceive other-dimensional monsters, and allows them to perceive humans right back. It's way creepier than Re-Animator, but unfortunately not as fun. But it's also got the great Ken Foree, who is a boon to any movie.

Except for Mordrid this is basically a vampire weekend for me. Subspecies, like that other film, was by Full Moon Features, kings of of direct-to-video in the 90s. I thought I had never seen this movie except for an early scene where the bad vampire Radu makes his demonic blood homonculi...but a later scene with a groundskeeper and a rosary bead loaded shotgun was also very familiar. So maybe I watched most of this movie many years ago and forgot. It's a very forgettable film, it just sort of plods along with no surprises and no standout performances. It shot on location in Romania...which looks like an awfully dreary place.

They made three sequels and a spinoff, so there must be something about the franchise that picked up a fanbase. They're all available on the Tubi app, so I'll watch at least one more.

A remake (sequel?) of a 1974 sexploitation movie. Two sexy vampiresses have an old house in the countryside and they seduce and waylay unsuspecting travelers. It's credited to a company called "Artistic Entertainment", which is a rather audacious claim. It seems like the movie maybe wants to be taken seriously, but I'm really not sure. Not good.

Definitely the third best Hammer update of a Universal Monster after Dracula and Frankenstein. Also the third best of the movies where Christopher Lee strangles the crap out of Peter Cushing.

    19b. The Conjuring (2013)

Never saw this before, but I've heard people sing its praises for years. It has a strong Poltergeist vibe, and while it was not quite as good as that movie, I still enjoyed it. I'll definitely seek out the sequel, though I don't think I'll be in as much of a rush to see any of the various spinoffs of the "Conjuring Universe". (That said, I must admit that it is nice to see a horror-themed cinematic universe actually succeed)
