Another Slasher Wednesday. Also known as Fall Break, pretty typical setup with college students saying in condo for the weekend, where a psycho waits to pick them off. It's clear from the start that the killer is one of the guy's fathers, but curiously, that fact has almost no bearing on the actual story as it plays out.

Over the years I've always caught this movie on TV in pieces; first 10 minutes, last 10 minutes, 20 minutes in the middle. I don't think I'd ever seen it from beginning to end before today. And, it was pretty good. No classic or anything, but a solid little "thing is supernatural" movie.

Definitely feels more like a Stephen King story than a John Carpenter one, if you know what I mean.

No way! I just watched that last night!

Somehow, I don't believe I had ever seen The Changeling.

I liked it a lot. It's got great atmosphere/sound design. It's definitely of it's time, yet you can see it's influence in stuff much more recent.

I saw it for the first time about eight or nine years ago. I was amazed at how great it was. Just creepy enough to keep you in suspense. When they uncovered the well, I immediately thought of how this film must've influenced "The Ring".

Review: After two nights of disappointing movies, I was initially going to watch Dog Soldiers, a movie I remembered fondly, before this title caught my eye. Similarly themed, I figured I'd give it a shot and I am glad I did. I still have to wonder why there is such a shortage of horror movies in war settings, especially as horrific as the first World War, which Deathwatch plays to its strength as the atmosphere is just a crushing misery of cold rain, sinking mud, and rat-filled trenches with the first real bit of tension coming from the characters being uncertain if they're still surrounded by gas when one of their masks goes missing. From there it gets worse as wounds fester and sanities are eroded by an unknown evil lurking within the unknown trench they're forced to defend. Definitely recommend a watch.

This is a BBC TV adaptation starring Louis Jordan as Dracula. It's billed as the most faithful screen adaptation of the novel, and I'd say that's essentially true, at least on a story front. Some details and characters are changed: Lucy and Mina are sisters here, Quincey Morris and Arthur Holmwood are merged into Quincy Holmwood, we actually see the count visiting Renfield, Dracula openly toys with Harker more than I recall from the book, even deliberately revealing himself in England. Given how closely it follows the book, I'm surprised there's no attempt made to have Dracula appear older when Harker visits him in Translyvania. Surely some grey hair and wrinkles, maybe some facial hair, were doable even on a BBC budget.

It's fairly well shot for what its, aside from some really cheap video after-effects, the kind you might see in old episodes of Doctor Who. It's all a bit stodgy and the third act sorely lacks a sense of urgency. A climatic shootout with Drac's Gypsy servants isn't well staged. But the sets and costumes all look fitting. They also filmed in some actual locations that Stoker mentioned, so kudos for that.

Mina is played by the same actress who was Andromeda in the original Clash of the Titans. The guy playing Quinn Holmwood isn't good...his Texan accent sounds almost as bad as Keanu's British accent in Coppola's movie. Almost. I quite liked the Van Helsing in this, and Jordan as Dracula isn't an all time great, but he is good. He gets some fun villain monologue playing against the good Dutch doctor.

If you like Dracula movies and/or you like the novel, it's certainly worth a checking out. Maybe not in one sitting. It's on YouTube.

I don't know what to call this. The movie itself has the title "Eat Local", but the Amazon Prime and IMDB pages both call it "Eat Locals". And there are movie posters and reviews using each name. And there's not even a wikipedia page for it.

But anyway, it's a UK horror comedy about a group of vampires who get together to have a meeting in a remote farmhouse, only to be pinned down by a military vamp-hunting team. It's kind of the exact opposite of Dog Soldiers...this time it's the monsters as the protagonists inside the house and the soldiers as the antagonists trying to get in.

It stars Daredevil, Martha from Doctor Who, Gwen from Torchwood, one of the guys from The Office, etc. It's no What We Do In The Shadows, but it's cute.

Review: This was a movie that could have been an absolute trainwreck since it's two different genres mixing into one. On one hand, you have a horror-themed comedy in which the main protagonist, Kaashmora, hunts ghosts for a living, while on the other, you have this epic tale of an ancient warlord and the queen he seeks to make his own. It takes a bit for the two stories to intertwine, long enough to where I had to question it aloud, yet it managed to combine the two with enough charm to make up for any imperfections. Worth checking out if you're curiosity, but it's not entirely for everyone.
