    2 - The Lords Of Salem (2012)

    11172999_ori.jpg

A frustrating film with so much squandered potential, best summed up in this line by Neil Genzlinger from his New York Times review "Considerable care goes into establishing the premise, but the film eventually abandons psychological subtlety for hallucinatory garishness, which is too bad."

The movie The Lords Of Salem wanted to be. Unfortunately for Rob Zombie the dream/hallucination scenes, along with the makeup effects, were done infinitely superior 44 years prior to his efforts.

    Doubled up yesterday with:

Maggie which had been on my HD for a long time. It's a nice, quiet and different take on the Zombie genre.

The Dead Don't Die. I don't know why this got such bad reviews. It's exactly what I expected out of a Jim Jarmusch Zombie movie. I thought it was wonderful. Certainly won't be for everyone, but which of his films is?

    3. Kuroneko (1968)

Two peasant women are raped and killed by samurai. They come back as vampire-like spirits seeking revenge.

Even for one of the low-tier slashers, this was pretty boring. Because of the setup, the killings don't start until the prom does, which is at the end of the movie, which means the first 2/3rds of it is poorly-made teen drama with interchangeable, boring kids. Jamie Lee Curtis is given nothing to work with. And even once the prom starts, the kills and the killer are completely unremarkable. There's a Scooby-Doo mystery element to the killer's identity, with a cavalcade of red herrings introduced in very short order, but I dare you to care about it.

On the second day of Halloween I give you....

This short film by famed special effect artist Kevin McTurk is another newish favorite of mine. It's a great Gothic horror story just oozing with atmosphere and the best part it's all done with puppets of varying types which is fantastic.

    October 1st. 1 - The Old Dark House (1932)
    October 2nd. 2 - The Redeemer: Son of Satan(1976)

AKA The Redeemer, AKA Class Reunion Massacre

Very low budget but surprisingly well acted considering. And decent production value. Still, it's an odd duck of a pre-Halloween slasher. There seems to be some Giallo influence. The basic "killer traps a group of people at a reunion premise" feels like it's got a vaguely explained supernatural element pasted onto the beginning and end. The killer uses various costumes and has no favorite method: deathtraps, barehands, even guns are employed.

Because American Horror Story is a slasher homage with 1984 this season, I'm going to try to watch at least one slasher each Wednesday when new episodes air.

Also, the next Full Moon is October 13th so I hope to get more than one Werewolf move in on that day.
