From various articles I've read of John Byrne, in my opinion, he would never have allowed his run to be promoted like that. He would have walked before allowing the higher ups to promote his run of Wonder Woman in such a way.

But also realize, that was the 90's, and no one would have cared. Wonder Woman is more prominent now than she was then.
I think restorative nostalgia is the number one issue with comic book fans.
A fine distinction between two types of Nostalgia:

Reflective Nostalgia allows us to savor our memories but accepts that they are in the past
Restorative Nostalgia pushes back against the here and now, keeping us stuck trying to relive our glory days.

She almost did. Pretty sure Mark Millar pitched “The Rape of Wonder Woman” (as a joke he claims) and DC seriously considered it which just shows you how utterly stupid DC can be.

The thing with her death in John Byrne's run is that this happened at the tail end of various comic book "deaths" and "downfalls" and she was back in like 2-3 issues? Her death also felt kind of random, like, satan, that famous long time nemisis of Wonder Woman killed her. They didn't even fight, he just blasted her. At least Superman "killed" Doomsday.

Yeah, it was just a weak excuse for Hippolyta to take over as Wonder Woman.

Between 1992 and 1995 we had:

    "Death of Superman" (Superman)

    "Knightfall" (Batman)

    "Emerald Twilight" (Green Lantern)

    "The Contest" (Wonder Woman)

    "Terminal Velocity" (The Flash)

"Where Angels Fear to Tread" (Green Arrow)

I remember reading an interview with a DC bigwig (probably in Wizard) in the late 90's giving a breakdown of this era. As far as editorial was concerned, these arcs all fell under the same initiative; to tear down their respective heroes, then build them back up (albeit sometimes with a different person behind the mask/mantle). The point being to show that these characters are ultimately irreplaceable and are icons for a reason.

So to address the OP's question - WW did get her Knightfall/Death of Superman-Type Story as far as DC was concerned. The success of which was obviously not comparable, unfortunately.

According to DC, WW necking Lord was the equivalent of her Knightfall/Death of Superman arc

She did have something similar -- when Aretmis took over as Wonder Woman. It just didnt' have the weight of the stories for Batman and Superman.
