Default Formerly cool Websites that went downhill...

Aintitcool - does a lot of direct to DVD junk. I suspect since Harry isnt as healthy as he once was the site has faltered...

Retrocrush - used to have cool stuff like the worst ever Halloween costumes but Robert seems to have lost interest and mostly promotes comedy gigs..

IMDB - not the same since the forums were removed due to trolling, illegal download links etc.

Superdickery - run outta gags? Pop-up ads started infecting it.

    Others?

CBR used to have actual articles and columns worth reading instead of listicles

CBR comes to mind first, in this context. I haven't checked the front page in... years? Couldn't even tell you.

I'd also ad the AVClub group of sites, half of the posts just feel like ads these days. That's of the posts that aren't just ads.

I feel the same about AintItCool and IMDB. With the latter, I still look there for cast listings and various other bits of information when I can't remember the name of an actor. I really miss the forums because before it went to hell, there were a lot of interesting discussions there. AintitCool IIRC used to have some good movie and comic book reviews and discussions.

Hate to say it but CBR articles are mostly click bait, except Brian Cronin's columns are still worth reading. I think he's the only long time contributor left. I miss the Shelf Porn feature but I think it moved to another site somewhere. They used to have a lot more interviews, etc with the comic book professionals. I really liked the monthly updates with Jonathan Hickman and Tom B. when Secret Wars came out. Things like this they don't have much of anymore.

Yeah, SA really fell into neglect last time I checked. Do they still have awful link of the day, horrors of porn and photoshop phriday?

SodaHead used to me my go to forum site from like 2013-2015, then they banned all their users and became a poll service or whatever.
I needed a replacement and found this place.

The Root - got bought out by Gawker Media and the quality of writing quickly went downhill
The Griot - looks old and out of date - can't recall the last time I visited that site
Something Awful - as the Internet got more and more vulgar (and took itself too seriously at the same time), SA looked and read out of place. Even the forums are dying.
AV Club - see The Root but with the addition of smug white liberals on Kinja
Digg - showed that using voting as a subsitute for real moderation was (and is) a very bad idea. Near the end it got that terrible redesign and just a collection of articles submitted from all over the web.
Justin.tv - got done in by the copyright goons and then turned into Twitch apparently
Netflix - still has good content but the likes of Disney and WarnerMedia are really going to mess them up and the very reason that people turned to streaming will resemble cable more and more and more it's like there are streaming services popping up all over the place and still there isn't a way to say enter your accounts and have your stuff all in one place unless if you get something like a Roku

I didn't know SuperDickery was still around.

I'm gonna go ahead and throw BleedingCool on this list.

I don't know that content really went downhill, but simply for the excessive amount of ads.

I get ad content, but not to the point of ruining the user experience. I barely visit the site anymore.

    Salon.com
Under Bush, I was actually a paying subscriber to support the site for being an important voice. They had great journalists working there. And an awesome web comics section.
Then it started crumbling. And in 2016, they went full Waker Bragmann amplifying anti-Hillary propaganda straight from the Kremlin.

Toonzone--used to be the best place to talk about cartoon in the 90s and early 2000s. Real cartoon makers posted there and their golden age cartoons and anime forums were top of the web for the time. Most people posted there! Now there just still there.

Retrojunk--Was the main place to watch intros to shows, trailers and commercials in "rad" flv format! Then youtube came along---

Coolstuff-best tape trade site online in the 90s and early 2000s. Then dvd came along and killed it. Don't think they are even around anymore.

I saw a discussion the other day about how Facebook damaged sites like College Humor, Funny or Die, and Cracked; with executives chasing dollar signs where there were no dollars to find and crippling traffic to the sites and their established monetization systems. I'm not sure how accurate that all is, but I haven't been to those sites in years, so there's the ring of truth there.

On a brighter note, even though I don't frequent the site anymore, Newgrounds seems to be alive and well. I'm so happy about that.

The mods have gotten increasingly aggressive with postings & have been suspending/ban-hammering accounts for just odd behavior. Meh. After 15 years of SA, I'm over it. Lots of content for me over at Reddit.

I love IMDB, but I only ever used it for the factual data, cast and crew lists, award nominations, etc. And that's all still there.
