Default Paul Dano cast as Riddler in 'The Batman'

Matt Reeves has found his Riddler for The Batman. Paul Dano has joined the film as the classic villain, Warner Bros. announced Thursday.

Dano's version of the character will be named Edward Nashton, a departure from the comic books in which he goes by the name Edward Nygma.

Robert Pattinson is starring in The Batman, with Zoe Kravitz to play Catwoman and Jeffrey Wright on board as Batman ally Commissioner Gordon. Jonah Hill was at one point eyeing a role in the film as either Riddler or The Penguin, but the deal did not come to fruition.

Dano was recently nominated for an Emmy for his role in Escape at Dannemora. Dano directed, co-wrote and produced the critically-acclaimed film Wildlife. His film credits include Love and Mercy, Prisoners, 12 Years a Slave, There Will Be Blood, Youth and Okja, amongst others. Dano is represented by Anonymous Content, WME, Stone, Genow, Smelkinson, Binder and Christopher and Relevant.

Warner Bros. opens The Batman on June 25, 2021.

    He looks the part.

"Nashton?" Isn't that from the Arkham games? It doesn't sound new. I wonder why they're changing his name.

I'm seeing a lot of praise for the casting, so i going to assume he is a really good actor.

The only film of his cinematography i watched was The Emperor's Club.

Arkham uses Nygma. Telltale maybe? I don't follow that one.

Yeah, that's an old idea - first came across it in O'Neill's "Question" in the 80s, but I don't know if it pre-dates that. The idea being that "Edward Nashton" is his real name, but he re-styles himself as E. Nygma when he turns to a life of crime.

Never really liked it - seemed part of the whole "comedy loser Riddler" thing that went around for a while.

I mean, comic books are full of people with names that basically make it obvious what their gimmick is, so I don't see the need to explain it .

Interesting choice for Riddler, I don't follow Paul Dano's career but I did see him first in the classic 'The Girl Next Door' playing a character called "Clits".

    An appropriate choice, IMO.
