Not just the facts: Republicans' top six impeachment falsehoods

The morning after public impeachment hearings came to an apparent close, the biggest names in conservative punditry were happy to call the ballgame.

At the Wall Street Journal, Peggy Noonan declared that the case against Donald Trump had “been so clearly made you wonder what exactly the Senate will be left doing”.

“On the substance,” wrote Rich Lowry over at the National Review, “Democrats have won.”

But the color of the sky was different on Capitol Hill, where elected Republicans insisted Democrats had produced no evidence of wrongdoing and Trump had been summarily vindicated.

“I’ve just focused on the facts and it is clear as every day that goes by [sic] that Democrats’ case for impeachment is crumbling,” the New York representative Elise Stefanik, who participated in the hearings, told Fox News on Thursday night.

How can inhabitants of the same ideological ecosystem disagree so sharply? It appears that getting into the bunker with Trump, as the politicians have, requires embracing falsehoods too plain or painful for the pundits to bear.

Here is a list of major falsehoods in the air – or in the recycled air of the bunker, at least:
1 Trump is an anti-corruption champion

Republicans argue that Trump asked Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden and the gas company Burisma out of a concern about corruption in Ukraine. But that seems to be the single example, in his presidency and from his life, of Trump wanting to fight corruption.

Indeed, from the casino business to New York real estate to national politics, Trump has thrived where corruption thrives. He does not have a problem with corrupt regimes – he openly admires them. He also has a long track record of personal corruption, from running a fraudulent university and charity organization to keeping separate tax records for creditors and the Internal Revenue Service, to installing family members in key government posts, to profiting off the presidency, including through a hotel he has now put on the market. He also tried to steer a contract to host the G7 summit to his own resort. And he is a habitual liar.

House Intelligence Committee in possession of video, audio recordings from Giuliani associate Lev Parnas

The House Intelligence Committee is in possession of audio and video recordings and photographs provided to the committee by Lev Parnas, an associate of President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, who reportedly played a key role in assisting him in his efforts to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and Ukraine, multiple sources familiar with the matter tell ABC News.

The material submitted to the committee includes audio, video and photos that include Giuliani and Trump. It was unclear what the content depicts and the committees only began accessing the material last week.
"We have subpoenaed Mr. Parnas and Mr. [Igor] Fruman for their records. We would like them to fully comply with those subpoenas," House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff told CNN Sunday, with a committee spokesperson adding they would not elaborate beyond the chairman's comments.

An attorney for Parnas, Joseph A. Bondy, also declined to comment, directing ABC News to a statement released earlier in the day Sunday reading in part, "Mr. Parnas has vociferously and publicly asserted his wish to comply with his previously issued subpoena and to provide the House Intelligence Committee with truthful and important information that is in furtherance of justice, not to obstruct it."

The statement goes on to say, "His evidence and potential testimony is non-partisan, and not intended to be part of a battle between the left and the right, but rather an aid in the determination by our government of what is in the best interests of our nation."

Yup... Emerson polls, who showed Trump doing quite well in head-to-head contests, doesn't seem to have a house effect of oversampling Republicans at all:

The non-profit Property of the People along with the reporting by the Washington Post, have released information on how much money we the taxpayers are giving to Trump by virtue of his frequent trips to Trump properties. Any time he visits a Trump golf course, which also have hotels as I recall, the Secret Service and aides to the POTUS have to stay on the property too. The documents obtained are not very detailed. They list an expense and the property that received payment. The confusion is many of the expenditures list the property being paid as Trump National Golf course, and he has multiple properties by that name. They were able to tie in the date of the expenses to known Trump visits. This first series of reports are just for the first 5 months in office with a count of 21 Trump visits to his properties. Charges include

    - Trump aides staying in Mar a Lago suites at $546 a night
    - A bar tab of $1,000 also at Mar a Lago

Eric Trump has said that the Trump Organization only charges "at cost" for these expenses.

Default Donald Trump's history of extortion

Also found this information on the Property of the People website: Violent extortion threats made on behalf of Donald Trump

These two cases go back to a tax abatement for his Trump Tower Property and his Atlantic City casino bankruptcy

an individual implicitly claiming to represent Donald Trump threatened the wife and children of a New Jersey attorney representing Trump’s investors. The FBI opened an investigation, classifying it “Extortion; Overt”.

Documents obtained by PoTP and Leopold from the FBI reveal Kristopher Hansen, whose law firm Stroock & Stroock & Lavan represented Trump’s investors, received a threatening phone call on his blackberry from a pay phone on 54th Street across from the Ed Sullivan Theater in Manhattan. Donald Trump and his entourage were at the Ed Sullivan Theater that same day for a taping of the Tonight Show with David Letterman. Hansen informed the FBI that the caller was a “male and had a heavy New York accent.”

Additional documents from the Holmdel Township, New Jersey Police Department obtained by Leopold and shared with PoTP reveal the threatening caller explicitly told Hansen, “My name is Carmine I don’t know why you are f***ing with Mr. Trump but if you keep f***ing with Mr. Trump, we know where you live and we’re going to your house for your wife and kids.”
What always amazes me about Trump is that with all this stuff in his past, why it never seemed to result in anything. Was some insider helping Trump beat the charges? Not enough evidence? I think a lot of his history with Russia begins around this time. When his casinos failed, he was in deeply in debt to Goldman Sachs and he became toxic to any big lender in the U.S. I wonder if they will ever prove that his money comes directly from Russian oligarchs through Deutsches Bank?

Trump has been described as the “chosen one” by his secretary of energy, Rick Perry.

In the preview of an interview shown on Fox News on Sunday night, the adviser, who has drawn scrutiny for his role in the Ukraine scandal, also compared the US president to a number of biblical kings.

“God’s used imperfect people all through history,” Mr Perry told the broadcaster. “King David wasn’t perfect, Saul wasn’t perfect, Solomon wasn’t perfect.”

He revealed that he gave Mr Trump “a little one-pager on those Old Testament kings about a month ago”.

“I shared it with him and said, ‘Mr President, I know there are people that say you said you were the chosen one and I said, ‘You were,’” Mr Perry said.

Makes you want to vomit. I hate to disparage a religion but I think the evangelicals make things up to suit their politics.

It makes sense to me. The only god the GOP worships is Money, and they've been praising all the way to the bank.

Maybe if we all put our heads together we could find something that will be ground-shaking. Would that be interesting.

They've been an above average pollster for decades ... they use Registered Voters over Likely, which could explain the change. Just because you don't like what something is saying, doesn't mean you throw it out. Also, they could course correct for bias akin to how Pew does. I can tell you I will be watching the lean from now on with Emerson.

I'm more interested in that both KNOWN historical conservative polls have him down the most of his term now and BOTH have the impeachment support in the majority of their sample.

Trump was elected because he got Russian bots to spread lies about Clinton online on his behalf.

Call me kooky, but maybe it would help if actual people would discuss the truth about Trump's blatant corruption right now.

I say throw it out because it's a ridiculously clear outlier. I would not waste time hand wringing over a poll that is so out of touch with literally every other poll out there.

or it was the scheming to rig the primary basically telling a chunk of the base that our opinions didn't matter. but by all means tell the truth about Trump's corruption.
